Better Sweater Jacket delivers classic fleece warmth with everyday versatility
What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"This is one of those fleeces that never leaves my rotation. It’s warm without being bulky, layers smoothly under a shell, and the contoured fit makes it look great on its own. The recycled fleece feels soft and holds up really well—I’ve put mine through years of hikes, travel, and daily wear."
We reach for the Better Sweater Jacket when chilly mornings, cool hikes, and mid-winter commutes call for reliable warmth with a clean, polished look. Patagonia’s recycled knit fleece feels soft inside and out, delivering cozy comfort while maintaining a refined sweater-like exterior that transitions effortlessly from trailheads to town. The contoured fit layers smoothly over a baselayer and under a shell, giving us adaptable warmth without unnecessary bulk.
Raglan sleeves enhance mobility—especially when we’re wearing a pack—while the internal wind flap adds subtle protection from brisk breezes. Zippered handwarmer pockets and a sleeve pocket keep essentials close, and princess seams shape the silhouette for a flattering fit. With its blend of comfort, performance, and timeless style, the Better Sweater Jacket remains a staple for cool-weather adventures and everyday living.

Best fleece
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
Love this fleece. Super comfy and nice weight for fall and spring, or for layering under thicker jackets for winter. Fit is a bit small, I sized up one size and it’s perfect for me. I love the zip pockets as well. I got the ruby color which is like a burgundy-brown color in person rather than true ruby red.

Short arms, slim upper, frumpy lower
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it
I wanted a utilitarian jacket for layering under rain jackets when hiking/cycling in the winter or as cozy warmth around the house. The fabric was soft both on the other and inner layers, and the pockets were roomy. The XS fit was off on my body, though. I have a 33" chest, and the upper part of the sweater fit fairly snug, including in the armpits. The arm length came to 2" above my wrists. The rest of the torso of the sweater went to mid-hip--longer than I would expect--and actually seemed wider at the hip and belly area. So the effects was fitted top and frumpy lower. Not sure why this one fit so strangely, as I've previously had good sizing consistency with Patagonia products. It's hard to name whether it is smaller or larger than expected, as it's both.

Not as comfy or cute as you’d think
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it
I purchased the Better Sweater in concrete purple and black. I purchased a size small. I’m 5’1” 115lbs. The jacket was a bit long and stiff on me and felt so frumpy. It could just be me, but I was very disappointed in the feel (stiff and not soft) and style of the items.

Runs small/ tight fitting
My normal size is small. This fits very tight especially in the arm and pit area and my arms are not even big. My arms are very slim. I should’ve gotten medium had I known these jackets run small. Now they didn’t have size M in the floor I want. Mb I’ll keep small and deal with tightness in the arm area. Note to self- with these jackets, size up. I also ordered the same version in vest in size small, which is also very tight and small. Luckily I was able to exchange vest to medium.

Bought this item a few weeks ago and have worn several times. Great color (green) and worked well in the city as well as in the mountains during a ski trip.
