The sun has nothing on you when you're wearing the Outdoor Research Sun Runner Cap.

Even if the sun is blinding, enjoy your after-work jog with the Outdoor Research Sun Runner Cap on your noggin. Outdoor Research constructed this stiff-brimmed hat with UPF 50+ SolarShield Fabric and gave it a removable sun skirt for total protection. The Sun Runner Cap's side air vents and moisture-wicking Coolmax headband keep you cool and comfortable, while the adjustable Cinch-Strap gives you a custom fit.

the best

I've had and abused several of these caps over the years and I can tell you they are fantastic outdoor covers for active people. I have an old one with paint spatter and a small tear that I use for messy outdoor work. Keeps the sun, the bugs and spray mist off your head and neck. Another one for kayaking, camping etc. and looks good with the shroud removed too. Salt water will not affect the fabric or the snaps. Light weight, easy to wash and dry. Wish the bill had a fold for easier packing.

I am pale. Very very pale. I love to play outdoors. If you are like me and basically allergic to the sun, pick one of these up. They fit great, come in many colors and keep you from roasting.

Great for sun and bugs!

Used this for a camping trip to San Rafael Swell. Not only did it work great for the sun, but also protected neck against several tiny bugs flying around at dusk.

Is it UPF 30+ or 50+ as the OR official website says?
Or is it the previous version of the cap?

Good question! It is UPF50+. The product is current, it's just that the description that is old! I will let my friends at Backcountry know. Thanks for writing!

There isnt anything that is impressive about this hat, but it does the job it's meant to...it keeps the sun off of my neck and out of my eyes. It's also much more breezy then I thought that it would be.

Hey there Tom - this hat is one of our top selling hats for sure at Outdoor Research. Cool and breezy, this hat keeps the sun off with UPF 50+ sun protection. And, if you don't want the cape, you can remove it! Thanks for taking the time to write!

Full coverage or not

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great hat.
Option to add the skirt for full coverage fantastic in SoCal sun.
Also perfect for bright days humping it in the snow when the rays are at you from every direction or when a chill wind is up but you're working too hard for a balaclava.
So far every thing but tree sap has washed easily, with a bit of oxyclean for that brand new bright white.
Loosen the cinch strap to catch a bit of breeze or tighten it up if a bit of gust would otherwise send you back to the store.
If you're at the limit and need all the air you can get flip the sun skirt up top and cinch it up to keep it in place.
Easier to run with than sun glasses.
For sunrise/sunset runs no need to adjust/remove/store as the light changes.
Post epic feast or just walking to brunch in the sun, remove the sun skirt and still let everyone know you're down for action without looking ...weirder .

The hat is a touch on the shallow side when compared to a standard ball cap but I've come to appreciate this when working hard as well.

Adjustable in rear with single loop back Velcro strap, this threads through the sun skirt to secure. This can make the rear skirt attachment a bit fiddly, though not bad.

Nice full coverage hat and shade

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

The hat is super lightweight and you barely notice it is on your head. I have not really used it in a desert setting . However, it is a great piece of kit for any activity above treeline. The full coverage sun shade goes on and off easily with one hand. The full coverage and wrapping front is great for glacier travel. I highly recommend this as a sun hat.

Saves You from Stressing a Burnt Neck!

At 13,000ft the sun can be killer-clown ridiculous for your skin, but this dude is muchin' on chexmix without sunscreen-tainted hands and his neck is staying as white as when he slapped the 4am alarm that morning. Leadville, CO.

Favorite cap for springtime touring

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a great hat for any activity under the sun. It provides super good shade and keeps you nice and cool when you're working hard. Packs up really small and stuffs away in your pack.

I use it a lot for touring as well, I find it is a great piece of kit for any glacier or above treeline travel.

What size, need 2Xl

If you use the drop down menu that says "select options" you will be able to see the sizes and colors that we have available. Right now the largest size we carry is an XL.

Essential for long hiking trips.

I got this for my husband because his neck always gets burned when we go hiking. This helps tremendously. It's nice that you can hide the neck cover when necessary.

I have a big head, 25" circumference - or a size 8. Does the size XL have adjustments that would allow me to fit it to my big noggin'? Mark

tex,

The Outdoor Research Sun Runner Cap does not have a circumference adjustment like a snap or velcro, but it does have a good amount of elstic pleated in the back to allow for a variable fit if you are between sizes.

Dont look any further here they dont have XXl sizes. Try e4hats it has big hats.

Outdoor Research calls it the SunRunner, but here all it's doing is a moderately-fine job of keeping my eyelashes frost-free in a weird frozen fog at 3am on the Kahiltna.

I probably have upwards of...eh, let's just use the ubiquitous "hundreds" quantifier, of photos of me in this hat, or in one of the 4 hats of this type I have owned.

It goes under my helmet, under my beanie, over my dome, under a buff, over a buff, in a hood, even OVER the hood on one of my floppy-hooded puffs (no drawstrings on that puff's hood...thing gets all manner of askance...)

Wearing it spilled over into casual life, then into work life, sometime around late 2009 and pretty much everybody I know has since become disgusted with how frequently I wear it.

I think it's actually turning into a bit of an...issue.

I tried to shake things up with a shiny, black Craft hat recently, but it's just not the same vibe, man...

The skirt thing on this is great if you don't like schmozzing sun goo all over your neck and ears and cheeksandface every 8 hours.

I took mine to a tailor and had a snap installed on the front, so I could secure it from wind. I don't like the tie-down solution they went with.

But I don't use it much. I posted a pic here somewhere of the hat with the skirt and my little snap engineering project.

It dries fast, the velcro strap is nice to crank your lid down in the wind, the sides (which are not visible in this pic) vent out, so it never feels hot.

It's a great hat.

Sometimes when I like something, I buy 4 of them at once because I know the company will discontinue it before I stop liking it.

I did that with this hat. I have 2 left and both are pretty gnarred-out. One gets frequently bleach-washed and is thus starting to look more not-here than here, and the other one used to be white and is now just yellow and very sadpants, and that is gross.

Glad they are still making them.

Everybody who knows me probably wishes they'd stop making them...suckers.
