    Service Course SL Stem

Zipp's entire Service Course line proves that aluminum still has a place in cycling componentry — it will never be as light as carbon, sure, but it will never be as expensive either, and that's enough of a reason for us to stand behind it. Zipp strikes an admirable balance between cost, weight, and performance with the Service Course SL Alloy Stem, which features a 3D-forged 7075 aluminum construction to give it a mix of superb strength and stiffness inspired by kit built for the peloton.

Both stems in the Service Course line are built in the same tooling, with smooth lines and a newly redesigned faceplate with enough negative space to for easy handlebar orientation. Compared to the pedestrian version, the Service Course SL stem drops some grams with CNC-machining and by replacing the stainless steel Torx bolts with titanium.

    • Lightweight stem that balanced price and performance
    • 3D-forged aluminum construction resists flex
    • Titanium bolts ensure highest strength and lowest weight
    • Four-bolt clamp distributes stress for reduced chance of failure

    Surprisingly good

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 100

I swapped out an S-works SL stem for this one for sizing purposes with the intention of swapping back for an S-works once I had my fit all worked out. To my surprise the Zipp Service Course SL is awesome! It actually felt noticeably stiffer than than the S-works, I think due to the square shaped cross section, and is lighter by a few grams. The finish is also much nicer. Needless to say I am staying with the Zipp. I highly recommend this stem. Uses T25 bolts so make sure you have the right tool.

Great stem for what it is. The weight is as advertised, easy to install, no issues so far. Hard to find much to elaborate on with a stem but it does what it’s supposed to do!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 90mm

A nice lightweight stem at a good price.

    Don't need C

A stem is a very straightforward part. Seldom does one fail do it's job, but this one does it's job while looking stylish, lean, and clean. Carbon stems have nothing on this unit. The 7-series alloy and ti hardware make it a premium part at 1/3 the cost of carbon at exactly the same modulus (stiffness).

Does the job, and does it well!

This is a great, high quality, lightweight titanium stem. Zipp is always a great option.

The Service Course SL is the best bang for your buck. It's reliable, strong, light weight and it looks great!

As we all know, Zipp makes some of the absolute best carbon road wheelsets in the world. They also make -fantastic-cockpit components.

The "Service Course" SL is simply one of the BEST road stems made in the sport -especially for the price.

Super high quality (3-D forged, aircraft grade, 7050 aluminum alloy), strong, light weight (Zipp says 135g in size 100mm) ...and... affordable. That is a combination that is hard to beat.

In addition, Zipp's Service Course SL stem in their "beyond black" finish is absolutely stunning, one of the best looking road stems on the market today. This is bike jewelry.

Install note: I strongly rec the use a quality torque wrench or one of Park's excellent new torque keys ($45) to tighten the bolts down to spec (6 Nm max). Don't over tighten. And you don't need to if you use a torque wrench.

beyond black from the picture it looks like blue, is it black or has a shade of blue?

      @maynard - nope, it's definitely black.
