Umpqua designed its Streamer Taper 5' Leader specifically for fishing streamers with either a full-sinking or sink-tip line. The shorter length gives the line more control over the fly, so you know exactly what section of water you're working.
- Q & A
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I generally make my own streamer leaders out of a couple different sizes of fluoro, when I saw these I decided to give them a shot. They are really pretty cool when it comes down to it. I love the 5 foot tapered leader for chucking meat. I will say that I didn't have great luck with them when I threw a sinktip on my line. Tried it both on the 8wt Redington Predator and my Redington Dually switch rod. It definitely works but it makes casting cumbersome. When I threw on a heavily weighted streamer with the sink tip it seemed to perform much better.
I've found that I can get 4 or 5 streamers on and off here before it becomes too short, beauty of it is, then you just nail knot some fluoro on there and your're back in business!
Turn over monster streamers
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I got the 5 ft. 12 lb version of this leader. I use it on a 7 wt full sinking line and it turns over big articulated streamers with ease. I like the 5 foot so i can add 2x flourocarbon tippet to the end if im fishing a smaller streamer or keep it short for heavier flies.
