Those leaving on extended backpacking and thru-hiking trips need to save weight wherever they can, and they need to do it without sacrificing performance and dependability. Ultimate Direction understands the needs of backcountry nomads, which is why they designed the ultralight FK Carbon Trekking pole. It's got perhaps the highest strength-to-weight ratio on the market, so you can pound out huge days over any terrain without being weighed down. While most trekking poles have a diameter of 13.5mm, the FK Carbon comes in at 20mm, which offers a huge boost in strength and stiffness while added practically no weight at all. Its fixed length saves weight and increases strength, making it perfect for anyone who won't be putting them down from sun-up to sun-down.
The lower section of the pole is tapered for a smooth swing weight and is aramid-wrapped to prevent abrasions from rocks and low-hanging branches. The ergonomic EVA grip has a standard standard top-grip for regular trekking, and a lower grip to give you hold on steep and rocky ascents. It's got a carbide tip that offers a strong hold on any surface, and comes with trekking and snow baskets for all-season use.

Poor Quality Control
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
Superlight poles. Unfortunately, I had one kink on me in the first mile of use, from a pretty minor snag. The second pole has continued to be great under heavy mountain running use. My only thought is that the one pole may have had a weak spot and/or I caught it just right. Fortunately, Backcountry has been great on the customer service end.

Carbon superbike of poles
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
Simple means lighter, stronger, sturdier and stiffer. Has fat tubes like a road bike. Weighs 4oz each. Jumped over block fields off trail last week in the Sierras and beat the crap out of them. They have a few scratches but are by far the most bomb proof poles I have - at any weight.
