Why We Like The A1 MIPS Helmet

Building on Troy Lee Designs' heritage of hard-hitting gravity and motocross protection, the A1 MIPS Helmet provides bomber protection in a lightweight package to top off epic enduro runs and technical trail adventures. Featuring the same extended protection at the back of the head and around the temples as the standard A1, the A1 MIPS steps the safety up a notch with the inclusion of the Multi-Directional Impact Protection (MIPS) system for an extra boost of Impact force dissipation any time you (literally) hit the trail.

In addition to its penchant for safety, the A1 MIPS boasts a heap of features to keep you cool and comfortable. A total of 16 large vents usher cooling airflow and encourage constant air movement across your dome. A removable, soft and plushy Coolmax liner sits comfortably against your head, fending off the stink produced by bacteria, and not to ignore fit, the A1 MIPS helmet incorporates a three-position adjustable retention system for a custom, easily dialed fit.

  • A lightweight helmet built for technical trails
  • MIPS technology aims to reduce rotational force in certain crashes
  • Durable in-mold shell construction
  • Large vents promote cooling airflow
  • Highly adjustable retention system dials in the fit
  • Adjustable visor fends off branches and glaring sun

Worst helmet 🪖 of all time.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large

I would of returned it if I had other options during the pandemic but I had to replace my old one and so it was used.

The helmet sits low in front and blocks your forward periphery.

It has two points that come down on the back of my neck. It did fade after awhile. So I’ll give that a pass.

The padding has peeled apart and is now just hanging.

The adjuster dial in back is partially stripped

Not enough vents. Holds lots of sweat 😓

I would never 👎 buy this again or recommend.

Great helmet!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I went through a whole host of helmets trying to find the one that'll fit my small noggin. Well this is it! It's lightweight, seems to have good airflow. Granted it's 54 degrees or so here in GA in February so I can't say what it'll be like when it's 95 degrees in August. As it stands I think it'll be fine. It is really comfortable, no pressure points. The color scheme is great, colorful but not obnoxious- bought the classic dark gray/aqua. The gray is more of a muted gray/navy. It also doesn't look like a giant mushroom on your head which many of the MIPS helmets tend to do, especially if you run small. Hopefully I won't ever have to test out the safety features! Backcountry has awesome customer service too!

Fits perfectly!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M/L

Fits perfectly and no issue with ventilation as many others claimed.

Great fit, too hot

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I bought this helmet because I loved the fit. Super comfortable during rides of all sorts, long and short, EXCEPT this helmet does not breathe well. Might work well if you ride in a dry climate all the time. Not great on humid days. The TLD makes me sweat like never before. Still love the fit and will keep using for that. But might look for a different option for the summer months.

Good Stuff

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Lightweight, comfy and breathable...this thing fits the bill. Luckily, I haven't tested the MIPS yet...but glad it's there when the day comes! It fits a bit larger than I expected so I sized down.

Get one!

Lovin' it!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

TLD A1 looks great, fits great, super lightweight and you have MIPS protection. My favorite helmet for the trail for sure.

Gift of safety and TLD cool

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: small

Bought this helmet for my girlfriend which she had been coveting it after seeing it on our local trails in Bellingham, WA. For a lot of us gear heads here this our go to MTB helmet for fit and style. cant go wrong here!

Great Fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I tried several helmets from the different brands and this one is the one that fit the best, I am between medium and large I can ride and it stays snug on my head

MY FAVORITE HELMET

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am new to biking and have LOVED this helmet! Good ventilation, lightweight, and fits snug. Nothing but good to say about this product!

Best helmet out there

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Extremely comfortable, lightweight, breathable, and it comes with MIPS. No complaints!

Fantastic Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Have a couple of these. One for myself and one for guest riders, and they're great. Along with myself, everyone who has used one digs it. Get it with MIPS and protect yourself.

Fierce

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Love Troy Lee products (check out the Skyline Shorts--awesome!): use the size guide to get the right fit. Light, comfortable, great ventilation. You can ride with confidence so be sure to spend a little more time to get the fit dialed in. Willing to spend a small amount more for the MIPS technology . Since taking time to adjust this to a proper fit, there's no slippage which could result in the helmet sliding back which can expose your forehead-never a good thing when you crash. Highly recommend.

Fits perfect.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Your noodle is covered if you go over the bars. Fits snug and comfortable.

Best HELMET HAIR

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Loving this helmet. Light weight, adjustable, comfortable, breathable....good looking and protects my brainy bits.
Normal head and i got the xs/s, its secure and feels good. Go for the best to save your brains.
**recent crash, hit the ground hard enough to dent my helmet. Without the good technology i dont even know what sort of condition my head would be in. Just purchased another helmet...and looking forward to getting back on the saddle.

Awesome Helmet!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Troy Lee makes some quality gear and the A1 is no exception. I have owned this helmet for a couple years now and have no complaints. Its protective, comfy, and looks sick. Not much else you could want from a helmet.

great lid

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Had the original A1 for a few years and love the fit and style. Now they add MIPS and the added safety is just another reason to own this helmet.

Great enduro lid

Bought this helmet to replace my smith helmet. Fits my head much better, and feels like it offers more protection. Only small qualm is my sunglasses don't fit as easily as with my smith helmet -- its a bit of a tight fit.

    Fits my big head well!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I always have a hard time finding a helmet that fits me well and this helmet actually fit perfectly! The matte black gives it a pretty slick look to it and the MIPS is always a plus for safety! I would highly recommend this for the avid mountain biker wether you are a weekend warrior or the everyday rider!
