An escalation in innovation.

Introducing interchangeable frames, the Tifosi Optics Escalate S.F. Sunglasses are game-changing shades for cyclists and runners. Each pair comes with a full frame with two interchangeable lenses and two half frames with fixed lenses. The half frame feels best during high-endurance workouts, while the full frame has a more casual look off the bike. A simple clip lets you interchange each frame in seconds, and the padded temples and nose pads adjust for a personalized fit. Tifosi Optics coated the scratch-resistant lenses with a hydrophilic coating to repel water, oil, and dirt.

Great, but Shield Lenses quickly broke

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought an Escalate S.F. set from Backcountry, not this exact set, but a different color (Black/smoke). For the most part, the full frame glasses work awesomely and swapping out lenses is a breeze.

The full shield-style lenses was also a great inclusion, and I enjoyed using them while they lasted. Keyword is lasted, unfortunately. Despite my best efforts at being gentle and particular with the angles I used to pop off the arms, after maybe 5, certainly no more than 8 swaps, I had one of the small pegs on the side of both the AC Red, and one on the Smoke shield lenses snap off. This rendered the lenses completely unusable, leaving me with only the full frame lenses (as well as a renewed concern about the strength of the plastic frame).

This may be just a consequence of the shield lenses being made entirely of polycarbonate, and therefore much more liable to brittleness when flexing to pop the arms on and off. Unfortunately, that also means that I'm stuck with a single sunglass style now (the Smoke lens that goes into the full frame, as the clear lenses obviously do not reduce any light), and more money I have to pay if I want to buy replacement shield lenses.

I have discovered that Tifosi is a good brand, but unfortunately this Escalate line seems like a money sink (at least for the shield lenses). The theory behind it is good, but I guess the materials can't quite keep up.

More than anticipated

This actually has 4 lenses with two different frame styles. VERY crisp view through these lenses. two blued/mirrored an orange and a clear. The clear only go in the framed front pieces, and the orange only in the frameless fronts. then you use the temple pieces on whatever frame style you use. Works well on a smaller and larger head sizes.

Great set of glasses!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

It took some getting used to changing lenses. At first I thought the lenses would break changing them. It required lot of patience and effort to snap on and off. I thought for sure I would break them. Well, they've held up well and I've been using and changing them out often and it's gotten easier after I broke them in. Now, I change them quickly like a pro. Great quality and value. The only disappointment is the lack of polarization in the lenses. However, Tifosi Optics does offer a polarized Fototec lenses that transitions from light to dark.

The size and fit is perfect for my large head. They stay snug and stay put no matter how hard I ride. The shields do hit my forehead sometimes when I forget to adjust the nose piece. Which help place them at the right height and distance from my face. I'm very happy with this product and I appreciate the flexibility of change lenses depending on the lighting and use conditions.
