McMurdo Hooded Down Parka III

Arm yourself against blasts of arctic air and raging blizzards this winter with the quintessential cold-weather protection of The North Face McMurdo Hooded Down Parka III. Packing warmth when the city turns to a frozen pop in the midst of single-digit temps, the McMurdo Hooded Down Parka III features 550-fill down insulation for high-loft warmth. Not only does the down insulation maintain high levels of warmth in the frigid cold, but it brings a luxuriously padded feel to your everyday commute and around-town errands.

When snowstorms barrel down on your city, the DryVent 2-layer membrane seals out wind-driven snow squalls from soaking through and compromising your warmth. Classic parka styling sits a bit longer to keep you warm and dry, especially in downright nasty winter conditions. The zip-off hood provides greater versatility for widely variable conditions, and it's packing an emergency gaiter for sealing out nasty weather.

  • Classic winter parka for battling frigid temps and blizzards
  • DryVent 2-layer membrane keeps out heavy snowstorms and wind
  • 550-fill down insulation maintains high-loft warmth in the cold
  • Meets Responsible Down Standards (RDS) for animal welfare
  • Sits at the upper thigh for extra protection from the cold
  • Zip-off hood provides more versatility to changing weather
  • Internal media pocket with convenient headphone routing

Excellent customer service

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I purchased a jacket I wasn't happy with and the team at backcountry.com couldn't have been more helpful. They paid for return shipping and gave me some advice on finding the right jacket for me. Extremely professional and courteous, I will definitely shop on this site in the future.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: large

I am a little stocky in the chest and shoulders and the jacket ran a little big in the mid section. I felt like Sponge Bob Square Pants but it will probably fit some well and others not.

Before I got this in December, I did a lot of research to find the warmest jacket for the money. All reviews pointed me to this parka. Since then, we have had a lot of nasty, cold weather here near Traverse City, Michigan. So far, I have worn it in -22 mornings being totally comfortable. I’ve wore this snowboarding, to my daughter’s ski meets, on my daily commute, snow blowing my driveway, and will wear it ice fishing this weekend. This is too warm to wear inside for extended periods. I’m 6’1” 200 lbs, and a large fits well, just a bit roomy. I personally don’t have much of a problem with the zipper as I had read others mention. It is a double zipper like a sleeping bag, so you can unzip upwards from the bottom - which I have found is handy to take a leak.

Impressed With My First Down Coat

Zipper and collar suck

Such a gorgeous jacket and so warm. Tough exterior. I loved it but had to return it because the zipper was absolute garbage. I could never get it zipped. Northface has always given me problems with zippers. I’ve had to send jackets back to have them replaced. The collar is a complete design disaster. Other than that this jacket was perfect I was so disappointed to Return

Finally found a + size coat for my dad

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

I bought this coat for my father and here is what he has to say:
Living in Boise, Idaho, it stays cold for quite a while.
This coat is great for my retired life, getting me to the mailbox, church, and from the car during shopping. I like this coat alot and it's 'quiet' (meaning the fabric doesn't crinkle when it's cold)

My husband has this coat and we just moved from Boise. This coat was too warm for him. Anything above 20 f and he is sweating buckets. He couldn't wear this coat there as just not that cold. It is is just right for him in Michigan weather at or below 0.

    Love this coat!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This coat is absolutely the best I’ve had! From the pockets in all the right places to the hood that you can customize and right on to how warm this thing is!!

    Super warm Parka

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

Purchased it as a gift and so far he loves the parka. He's mentioned that overall the parka is super warm and he has not had any issues. I thought the chest pocket placement is a little odd, they could have positioned the pockets a little bit lower but my buddy loves it.

    Love the McMurdo!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    • Size Bought: Small

I purchased this as a gift for a friend. This is what he said about the parka: “This parka is fantastic. It’s kept me incredibly warm and dry throughout this winter thus far. The down is incredibly comfortable as well. I haven’t tested it much in the mountains yet, but in freezing and windy temperatures in the city, it’s been great. Even considering that this is a parka, I think it runs on the larger size, like a lot of stuff from The North Face. In most brands, I wear a medium, but the small McMurdo fits me perfectly.”

    All good but the hood

Unfortunately the hood on this coat is not of much use in my opinion because it doesn’t have cinch down pull cords in the front on each side. So as soon as you get a gust of wind the hood wants to blow off your head and doesn’t really provide much protection. I also thought it would be warmer than my Marmot shadow down jacket which only comes down to the waist, but it could be because of the higher down loft.

      Works for me!

I was looking for a warm coat. That was my number 1 priority. This coat is warm, but not too warm for me (Missouri winter seasons). Yes, the coat is a little bulky. It is like wearing a down comforter. But that is also what makes it so cozy and warm. I was good to go with an undershirt, and a polo, with this coat in 9 degree temps. Yes, the zipper is a little cumbersome. But you will get used to it. Perhaps, the coat may not be quite as stylish as others, but what I really wanted was a nice warm coat, and that's what this is. I am 6'2", 220lbs and got the XL. It fits just ever so slightly large, but I am good with it. I don't think you are going to find a warmer coat for the money.

        Powerful Parka

Well constructed and extremely warm. Goes to mid-thigh for added warmth. Warmest coat I’ve ever owned.

Almost talked myself out of this jacket initially based on reading some of the reviews, after purchasing Im glad I didn’t listen to the lower rated ones. I was looking at a Fjallraven or Canadian Goose but kept getting caught up on price. I did some research, I wanted a Parka that extended past my waist so I looked up “warmest Mens parka”, to my surprise the McMurdo was rated second in three trials and 3rd in another one. Can find the links again if needed. It even beat out the three other coats I was looking at that are about $300 more. So I pulled the triggered and got it.

First! the only issue I have is with the zipper, being a Parka the coats zipper falls past your waist and it’s a tough angle to get and there is a certain technique to it. Initially it would take me a few tries to get but now I figured out how to get it and have no issues.

To me the XL is great, I have a 32 waist so it’ s not tight and routinely wear sweatshirts underneath. It is a Parka, to those reading this and then reading other reviewers I believe you lose some movement because tha€t’s the type of jacket. Yes it’s tough to lift my arms above my head, but I didn’t buy this coat for activities that require that.

There are 6 pocket and an interior electionrics pocket with headphone wire opening. Not sure how many more you need.

The hood cover my head fine, especially if the pull the cord to tighten in back of hood.

Again maybe it’s my liking, but there is no drawstring but have yet to feel wind come the bottom, if you have a big stomach though I could see this happening though.

The sleeves for me same size coat are fine, if your looking for active use I would not recommend besides light hiking, daily use or walks.

In general I’m happy with coat, it’s the warmest coat I’ve had.

          Great Purchase! Fantastic Coat!

It's definitely warm although feels too baggy and not fit to your body. It's not worth the money. I ended up returning mine

          This coat is trash!!!

Order what you will because honestly it doesn't matter to me. But here's my honest opinion on this jacket....there are options that are cheaper that are better and there are most certainly options that are more expensive which are much better. That said, here's my reason for bashing:

          1. Pockets: Small, oddly placed and WAAAAAY LACKING in numbers.
          2. The hood: Too wide and floppy while being too short, the fur ruff looks like cheap and the integrated neck gaiter constantly gets caught on your head
          3. Torso width: Lacking drawstrings this jacket justs flairs out at the waist inviting cold breezes directly up your coat.
          4. (The reason I returned mine) The arms are meant for little children, I by no means have long arms, with my arms raised to shoulder height the sleeves come to the middle of my forearm.

Spend the money on a Nobis or Canada Goose or save your money and buy a nice midlayer piece to wear with a cheaper coat

          Love it

Live in Ohio so winters are hit or miss, but we just had a couple weeks of single digit and negative temps and this coat has been awesome. I took the recommendation about it running bigger and got a medium instead of a large (I'm 5'10" 170 lbs) and it fits just right. The built-in gaiter is a great feature and eliminates the need to carry extra items. Only thing I would change is to have a larger zipper that's a little easier to use on such a big coat. Hoping it lasts for a long time!

          East Coast Approved

          • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
          • Fit: True to size

Bought this as a gift for my brother who lives in Boston and needed a warm parka to take on his first East Coast winter. This definitely does the job. Not too puffy, super warm and fits true to size. His only minor complaint is that the hood is a bit small for his liking. Other than that, he loves this parka!

          How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure the hip circumference at the fullest part of the seat, keeping the tape horizontal around the body.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
          Sleeve Length:
Measure the distance from the prominent bone at center back neck, across the shoulder, over the bent elbow to the center of the wrist bone.
