Really nice quality coat

  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Small

Purchased this winter coat my son who will be heading to college up north where the winters can get brutal. Did lots of research to find a coat that would be warm, water resistant, wind resistant, and not make him look like a snowman. This one seemed to check all the boxes. Ordered the asphalt gray/black combo and it looks great! First, regarding sizing, he usually wears a size mens Medium in t-shirts, jackets, etc. for most brands. But I’ve found that brands like North Face and Pantagonia tend to run a size larger, so we ordered him a size Small. He’s 5’8”, weighs around 160 lbs., and has an athletic build (more soccer player build than a runner). The small fit him perfectly, and maybe even slightly bigger than he’d prefer, but it’s fine because it gives him a bit of extra room to layer a thin fleece pullover underneath. I know a medium would be way too big for him. By the way, I’m roughly the same height but weigh around 185 lbs, and I tried on the coat and it also fits me, although I wouldn’t be able to fit a fleece underneath. It has some puffiness to it, but that’s to be expected for a down coat, but it doesn’t have that Michelin man puffiness that most down coats have. Material and stitching seem to be high quality. Pockets are a good size and the hood fits like a coat hood should. We considered several ski jackets but their hoods were too large because they’re meant to be worn with a ski helmet, but not this coat. I like the face cover feature that is sewn into the back of the hood, which you can pull over to cover the face when the wind starts to kick. We like the ribbed cuffs and ribbed hem at the bottom of the jacket, which hopefully will help keep the wind from coming in from those areas. I agree with some reviewers who’ve said the ribbing could be tighter, but I don’t see it as a big issue. Obviously, he hasn’t had a chance to test this in winter conditions, but so far so good!

Too warm!

Super toasty. I like the outer as it is tough and durable. It's a great heavy coat for those days when the temps are well below freezing. I like that the faux fur is removable.

    Winter Camping Approved

Should of gotten the Large, due to long torso. Really loved the cuffed wrist features so its not sliding all over my hands, and keeps air from getting in. Took it winter camping, where the temperature was easily under 17 degrees. But didn't overheat on commutes. Would definitely recommend!

    Couldn’t be more satisfied!

Best jacket I’ve ever owned. Size runs a little big but still looks fashionable. Kept me very warm during the January 2019 Polar Vortex.

      Best Coat Ever!

Best cost ever built. I don’t usually write reviews, but when a product comes along that simply overachieved your expectations. You have to share with others. I recently purchased this coat and lucky I did. The east coat was just hit with a bone chilling cold front. 9 degrees during the day. Freezing. But wearing this coat I was warm and toasty. The coat protected me from the wind and the down filled inside kept me very warm. There is a built in neck gator I have never seen before. It’s a life savor. Who wants to carry a neck gator with them? I sure don’t and was glad one is built in, and it’s hidden while not in use. Smart! If there is only one design flaw. I wish the jacket’s hood has an adjustable strap in the middle of the hood. They have two on the sides, but a third one in then middle would of been perfect. Besides that it’s perfect.

The best coat on the site

As a gearhead, I test out a new coat every two weeks. For casual jackets, this is hands down my favorite and its not close. The style, warmth, and features are everything I want in a piece for around town.

      Super warm

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large

I usually wear a Large and did get a Large and it fit true to size, in my case. The jacket is super warm and can take on the cold winters here in Utah. Does look kind of flashy with the fur hood but if that's what you're shooting for while wearing it out then this is the one for you. Really like it and would recommend it to someone in need of a casual winter coat for their daily commutes and going out.

      Love/Hate the jacket

first the Jacket runs big, go a size down. 2nd Great jacket for a outdoor walk at the park or on a date. So far its kept me warm this winter.

Feels like a cheap knockoff jacket!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Large

I ordered this jacket because of the good reviews, but got disappointed with the quality of the material. It does not feel like a $299 jacket. The fabric feels cheap and weak at the touch. The zipper puller is made of a weak plastic type material. Even the tags look fake with the big misaligned “Made in China” print. I thought at the beginning that I got a fake North Face jacket. The fit is not right. All my jackets and clothes are Large size. When I tried this jacket, it was way too big, like a XL or XXL. I tried to exchange it, but the exchange policy with backcountry.com is a hassle and makes it so difficult to discourage customers from making exchanges. It would have taken about a month for the exchange, and I needed the jacket sooner than that. If TNF Gotham jacket is what you want to buy, don’t expect the best quality-price ratio for this product.

I agree. I'm trying to get a refund on this jacket. My feathers are profusely coming out from the inside of the coat. Feathers are coming out of the seams. The outer jacket feels solid, but the inside material feels super cheap with feathers coming out.

Excellent coat for the Nebraska cold!

This is a very good looking coat. It is lightweight comfortable and does an excellent job repelling the wind and cold. The faux fur hood looks great even if it's a little bit big for my head! I bought my North Face coat in Brown... And all my friends were saying don't by brown brown is ugly. When it arrived my friends quickly decided that it was a beautiful color!

I can dig it! I was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base for 3 years and it was the coldest 3 years of my life!!

      Color is deceiving

Ordered this for my new heavy winter coat and was so disappointed when I opened the box. I researched this coat directly from The North Face website as well as a couple other outfitters. Every picture the coat looks like a khaki/light tan color. When I opened up the box I was disappointed with the actual, what I call military surplus/light olive green color. It’s not a bad color but khaki goes with a more variety of clothing/pant color. The coat felt like it would be really warm and made of great quality but the color was not for me and I wish the picture would have depicted the actual green color. Still gave 5 stars because I think it’s a great winter coat and quality materials. Fast shipping and easy return with Back Country!

        Too Large

        • Fit: Runs large

As many others have stated, this jacket was too large at my usual size. The body and sleeves are too long, the collar comes up too high. There is an Extra Small available at the North Face website. All of my other North Face gear is size Small and fits fine.

          BAD A$$ JACKET!

          • Size Bought: Medium

This thing is warm! Looks stylish and able to handle all cold weather conditions. Fits great. Faux hood is a nice feature. All around, I will have this jacket a long time. It is my go to for the coldest days.

          Great jacket!

I bought this jacket for my boyfriend. And I’m so happy I did, because right after Christmas we got a week of below zero weather. This jacket has been a life saver in blustery 30 degree days as well as extreme temps. I definitely recommend this jacket.

          Super rad !!

          Decent jacket

It's a pretty nice jacket, but there are a few small things that bother me about it and affect the conditions I'd wear it in. 1) the fur hood attached via buttons. Fine, but this allows wind to get through the flap holes which is a huge deal if you anticipate using this as winter coat. 2) the pockets for hands are not that large and are just lightly fleece lined. My hands get cold easily, so this is another big problem for cold conditions.
That's about it as far as the make or break features for me. Just know that it is 550 goose down so while it's warm, it's not all that warm, especially for it's large size. This makes it a cool weather jacket more than a winter coat, but it is too puffy for a cool weather jacket. I just don't think it serves a purpose on my wardrobe since I can't use it as a winter coat and it's a little large for a cool weather / mild winter coat.

Having said that, it is definitely one of the few styles you can get with a fur hood without breaking the bank. That would be the real purchasing decision.

          Great coat

Great coat, keeps me very warm during the cold and the ski mask built in has come in handy. My last few north face coats have lasted well over 10 years, so the quality from NF is always great.

            How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
            Chest:
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
            Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
            Hip:
Measure the hip circumference at the fullest part of the seat, keeping the tape horizontal around the body.
            Inseam:
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
            Sleeve Length:
Measure the distance from the prominent bone at center back neck, across the shoulder, over the bent elbow to the center of the wrist bone.
