Merino Performance Boy Boxer

The Stoic Women's Merino Performance Boy Boxer may consist entirely of wool, but it's not the thick sweater wool you're thinking of. This lightweight, performance underwear is designed to wick moisture, dry quickly, and keep odors at bay while you hike, run, bike, or ski.

  • Performance underwear for the trail or gym
  • Merino wool manages moisture and resists odor
  • Machine wash with cold water and hang dry

Quality but the sizing....

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: xs

LOVE these but.... still runs small. Seems to be a brand issue or fabric issue. Super cute but minimal stretch.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XS

Fit well, Got XS and it fits snug but is still comfortable . Warm. Washes well. Will purchase more.

Only undies ever that stayed down

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

They don't ride up in the back or down in the front. Fabric just right. MORE COLORS PLEASE!!!!! Err on side of smaller if you want them to stay put! Larger for comfort. BEST EVER.
Not sure about sizing, I just got back into this size, losing 28 pounds, but all the other smalls I ordered of half a dozen different brands were too big. I'm about a size 6-8 now. These in small were snug but stay put. And comfortable.

Miss the old ones

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I live in the old versions of these! And wanted a few extra pairs.
The new ones aren't as good. They don't fit the same. Not enough fabric in the back, so they're not as comfortable and I'm often adjusting them. That's a problem.
Also, the fabric's thinner, but the thing that really bugs me is the change in fit.
Now, they're okay, I guess. I'll still wear them, but probably will give preference to the older pairs until they fully wear out.

She is right about the fit in the back! First time buying these so I can't relate to the rest! I like t5hese, but you definitely need to wear a top length like the model's!

Fabric odor that was difficult to remove

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

They fit well and are very comfortable. That being said, the two pairs I ordered had a very strong, foul odor, especially the gray pair. I hand washed them twice, put them to dry in the sun for a week, and the odor did not fade. I finally tried spraying them with straight vodka, and the one pair smells like normal now, but the gray pair still smells. So I am going to try more vodka, and hopefully I can eliminate the odor.

I probably will not purchase Stoic products again due to this issue as I've spent so much time trying to remove the odor before being able to even wear them.

Not as good as the old Stoics

Like some commenters here, I have a few pairs of the original stoics. They were perfect! Fit was great, they were comfortable and were great to wear for outdoor activities. Sadly, these new pairs just don’t come close. The material is thinner and the fit is a bit off, doesn’t cover the butt in the same way. Wish Stoic would bring back the old version.

    The One That Got Away...

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I just don't think I'll ever get over the original version of these boyshorts. They were...perfection. I guess I should be stoked that they increased the percentage of merino in the blend (old style were 93% merino/7% spandex, new version are 96% merino/4% elastane), but in reality the price shot up and the comfort went down. I still have a few old pairs kicking around and to this day they are smooth and soft, stretch with you, but never bag out. The new fabric is thinner with less stretch (size up) and seems to thin out even more with regular washing. They have gone through the dryer a few times and I can see where the elastane has degraded and holes will soon form. Ideally I would always hang dry, but under the same conditions (and worse- somehow even the Grand Canyon couldn't destroy these bad boys), the originals have held up so much better and are still the most comfortable and flattering full-coverage, VPL-obliterating underwear I have ever owned in my life. All underwear will forever live in their shadow. Sigh.

    weird fit

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XS and S

these ran SUPER small and if you have any back end it will not fit. I wear an XS or S in icebreaker and neither XS or S fit in these. returned

aren't 100% wool per Tech Specs

From looks, they are true to size; not heavy. I was excited to find 100% merino wool shorts; but they are woven with elastane, like much women's garments, which gives them that slightly heavier or elastanized feel. I think the elastane is 3%. Not for me.

      Fit just as expected

This is my second pair of these, the first I got about four years ago and they finally started getting holes. I agree that they are a bit tight at first but they do start to stretch and the bottom edges start to roll up a little but I love these enough to not let it be a big deal. I'm sure it'll stop over time.

      Maybe not for me

After reading the reviews I was excited to use these boy boxers. Unfortunately, while the waistband fits fine, the leg/bottom edge rolls up ferociously on me and starts to cut into my leg. I was unable to wear these for any extended time due to how uncomfortable the leg portion was. I think if I sized up, they might start to sag/fall down.

      Great for skiing

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

      • Size Bought: Medium

For years I’ve heard how awesome the stoic men’s boxer briefs are, so I wanted to try the women’s version. These are a nice, thick material, and feel high quality. They don’t slide down and have a comfortable waistband and seams aren’t itchy. They’ve been great for skiing this winter so far. Only complaint is that the bottom edge still rides up / rolls up on me a but - not a deal breaker in my opinion, just don’t love them as much as my husband loves his pair.

      Good for skiing

These were a christmas present for my wife. She loves wearing them while skiing... they keep her warm and no more undie wedgies!

      Just not for me.

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Small

I really wanted to like these. They were true to size based upon the sizing guide. The legs did not ride up. The material is thin yet thick enough. I was able to wash in the sink and hang to dry. They air dry very quickly. The only issue I had was the waist band. The seam around the top felt like it was digging into my hips. It may be due to my lack of height and sitting in a different place than a taller person. I tried both small (dug into hips) and medium (too loose in other areas). Just not the right fit for me. I ended up returning the other pairs I ordered.

Good quality, warm and fits true to size

Good quality merino wool, good coverage and warmth and sizing is true.

I have been slowly expending the length of my undies from tiny briefs, to the hip huggers to now boxers. i have all wool undies, so when i stumbled upon wool boxer i went bananas. i bought several other brands too. No undie lines, check. Comfortable, check. cute, check. no riding up, check. temp regulated (wool), check. worth every freaking penny, but even better on sale.
i got these in a small and then also a med-i can wear both. i like the med but they ride up a little. the small is a little snug over my bubble ass, but still comfortable.
**i do a wool wash on my undies but honestly need to be better at hang drying. after a few hot cycles in the dryer the smalls are still wearable but if i bent over and i had low pants on you would see butt crack a bit....stoic does tend to run a wee small. even with other items.

Awesome review Ingrid! Stoked to hear that you are loving these.

I finally found a boy short that doesn't ride up (curvy/athletic figure), shows minimal lines if any, and has seams in the right places for comfort. I wash them on warm and hang to dry.

      They’ll do.

So like everyone else I loved loved these underwear, the originals that is. I will not wear anything else. I bought the new undies a while back in a medium and they were a little baggy and just didn’t feel as good. I bought them again I bought the small. They went from baggy to 😳. I’ll wear them, they aren’t a deal breaker but I will stick with the medium for size. These are so much thinner then the originals... I hope that these were just meant to be “summer” underwear and the originals will be back in the fall. Hint hint Stoic 😉😘 5’9” 149lb

        Stinky when wet

These fit well and are comfortable to wear but really stink when wet- worse than wet dog smell. Haven't had that with other wool underwear. The fabric is slightly thicker than Wooly brand or icebreaker, but not too heavy.

        Really like these

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Ordered two pairs, and now 3 more. I’m wearing as everyday, but I’ve also worn them hiking, and they keep the bum warm and no stink. They don’t ride up. They will show a bit under yoga pants, but not on all my other technical gear, or work pants. I throw in the wash on woolen cycle, and in the dryer on delicates. I’m 5’10, 152 pounds, and got the small.

        Garment Sizing:
Stoic gear refers to the size of the person for measurements, so take your own measurements to determine what size you should buy.
        Sizing Notes:
The Women's cotton tees run small especially for larger busts. We suggest ordering a size up.
        How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
Measure from the center of your back to your wrist with arms held out.
