11-30 Hits the Sweet Spot
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I'm 190cm, 95kg, and living in the Pacific Northwest I hardly see a ride with less than 1,000m of climbing and some of the big days are 150-200km with 3,000-4,000 meters of climbing with grades up to 16% or so. I run a 50/34 up front but the 11-28 just wasn't enough and with SRAM RED22 eTap short cage going above a 28 wasn't an option. So I swapped out the short cage for a Ceramicspeed OPWS and went to the 11-30. This truly hits the sweet spot, the 30 is enough for 95% of the really steep stuff and the upper mid-range on the 11-30 let's me stay on the big ring for punchy stuff and mid-distance climbs where I would normally have had to drop down onto the small ring up front. So for me this is a much better match to my watt/kg power curve. The 11-30 gives nothing away on the "flats", I'm faster through the punchy stuff, and that 27, 30 is perfect for those long steep climbs.
