Session MIPS Helmet

Style meets ventilation for total comfort in all-mountain applications in the new Smith Session MIPS Helmet. This all-new cranium coverage keeps your noggin on lock down with a combination of Smiths Koroyd technology and MIPS, shielding you from impacts both direct and oblique, so you can charge through rowdy rock gardens, while staying ventilated as you weave your way through technical switchbacks to the top for round two. And smith doesn't hold back on the good looks either, with a modern and sleek style that falls neatly between the previously loved Rover and Forefront, giving just a little more coverage than its cross-country cousin, but with less bulk than the enduro-ready Forefront.

Since your crashes rarely happen at a straight-on angle, MIPS addresses the specific pressures of an oblique, or non-direct impact, by separating the outer shell from the inner, MIPS layer. In the event of an angled impact, the outer layer slides across the MIPS layer, dissipating rotational force to reduce brain deformation, which is often responsible for concussions and long term damage. Since the impact of mountain bike crashes tends to happen at angles other than 90 degrees, this added element of protection will likely come into play if you take an unfortunate digger.

Backing up the MIPS technology with a bit of Smith's own work is a layer of Koroyd protection. Koroyd is what Smith is calling the funny looking layer of honeycomb tubes that runs beneath the outer shell and more traditional EPS foam. It's made of thousands of tiny, extruded co-polymer tubes that absorb impact but have a fenestrated surface that allows for a level of breathability impossible to achieve with solid EPS foam while absorbing a claimed 30% more energy. Plus, it's pretty cool looking, especially in Smith's mix of contrasting and complementary color schemes.

For total comfort, Smith equips the Session with 15 optimized vents that channel air in, and AirEvac at the front edge that sends cool air underneath your sunglasses to keep your lenses as fog-free as possible on long, sweaty climbs. The back is adjustable with VaporFit adjustment system that allows you to ratchet things down to the perfect spot, while the inside XT2 liner fights odor, and allows for easy washing after a particularly perspiration packed ride. The visor in front is adjustable in three positions to allow you the right amount of coverage for open, treeless climbs, and wooded, shady descents alike. And to make sure you've got the means for night rides and grabbing sick footy, the helmet is compatible with both light and camera mounts.

  • Style meets coverage for this all-mountain slayer
  • MIPS technology protects against rotational forces
  • Add an extra 30% of protection with Koroyd layer
  • 15 large vents keep cool air funneling through
  • VaporFit adjustment dials in total comfort for the ride
  • Keep your lenses fog free with AirEvac technology
  • 3-position visor adjusts easily for different conditions
  • Odor fighting XT2 liner keeps your scalp fresh

It's great!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I LOVE this helmet! I originally ordered one in a different color, but I ordered a Medium and it was too big. :( So I got the white and grey color in a small and it fits great! It let's air run through and I haven't had a sweaty head yet!

It's great!

For my very first mountain bike adventure in Fruita, Co. this year i needed to get a new helmet and quick. I knew without a doubt that it was going to be a Smith helmet with their stellar reputation for a sleek design, reliability, and safety in mind. Crashes are inevitable, might as well protect that meat vehicle with one of the best helmets on the market. In the heat of Summer my head was well ventilated with 15 different vent ports. With MIPS and Koroyd technology being used in the design of this helmet you know your noggin is safe when you buckle in. Also on the S/M side and the M might be a little big. Still fits on the tightest setting, but i may go for a S next time.

Great Helmet!

  • Size Bought: Medium

A great helmet for the money, fits well, looks great and love the color and the way it sits on my head. I bought a large but returned it since it was way to big for my hat size 7 3/8 which the Medium fits well. Very comfortable and looks cool as well.

I bought the Matte Mystic Green color and it’s very sharp looking.

Stylish and Protective

I bought the Smith Session about one month ago and have loved using it. The finish on the product is really nice to the touch and feels high quality. The 3-position visor is great for storing glasses or goggles and also is great to flip up when you're climbing through a shady trail. The only point of complaint is the lack of padding, as many reviews denote. It could use a bit more padding on the rear but wasn't big enough of a drawback to downrate it.

I wore this helmet about 20 times before taking a direct head impact on a gnarly downhill section. While I was bummed that I only got a month's use out of it, the helmet took an impressive impact. Just a little shaken up, I came away without any major injuries. I could tell the MIPS played a big role in the angled impact. The koroyd collapsed on either side of my head denoting that the helmet absorbed and dispersed the energy.

Nice Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M

I have a 59cm oval-shaped head and the medium fits just about perfectly, without too much wiggle room on the sides and just enough room for a hat underneath. It definitely weighs more than my road helmet, but I never noticed the extra weight while riding. The adjustment mechanism is nice and feels solid, and the straps are easy to adjust and stay in place while riding.

Overall the padding is good, the ventilation is good, and I think the styling is nice. The only downside I can think of is that there are no dedicated ports to stash sunglasses. That would bug me on a road helmet, but on a mountain helmet I don't care.

Percent fit

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

After trying on Fox, TLD, and several others I decided to go with the Smith. The fit was perfect and it seems to hug my head instead of squeeze it like some of the others. I really like the fact that it’s goggle friendly too. I love how ventilated it is, especially on those hot Moab rides in July. I have ye to test the mips and ima fine if I don’t ever have too. I do recommend this helmet with the smith goggles.

Session Helmet Matte Vapor/Klein Fade

Stylish helmet with a comfortable fit. Really like the adjustable visor.

Comfy and Looks Good

I love the ratchet that tightens and loosens this helmet. It is functional and has a great look.

    Solid helmet but little padding.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

A decent helmet with good style, fit and ventilation but the padding is cheap and almost non-existent. After an hour or so of riding, the helmet gave me headaches and became uncomfortable.

    decent helmet

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

Love the style, ventilation, visor functionality, and MIPS at a great price point. A couple gripes, though - the front brim of the helmet sits really low on the brow (I mean really low) and may push your sunglasses down your face. You can adjust the inner suspension mechanism slightly to pull it back to a more serviceable fit, but this is not shown in the manual provided. Even with the adjustment, I find it still interferes with bigger-lens sunglasses (i.e. POC). The other gripe is that the sweatband is super minimal, so a lot of sweat will drip into your eyes. It is possible that I have a misshapen head and excessively active sweat glands, though. The fit and style are otherwise good. Will definitely keep the helmet, albeit while using smaller sunglasses.

I too have experienced these exact two problems.

    Favorite helmet I've had

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Love this helmet - Easily adjustable, fits my head perfectly which is always touchy with both MTB and ski helmets for me. Stays really stable when I'm riding and the visor is easily adjustable depending on the sunlight, etc. Always helps when the product looks so good too. I bought the green/white one and it's always receiving compliments.

    Style

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Looks good, feels good, what more do you need to say. Highly adjustable and a great fit.

    Fantastically Wonderful

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I purchased the Forefront when it first came out and really love the fit of the helmet. But did not love the way the Koroyd construction somewhat restricted airflow. Don't get me wrong, it didn't trap heat against my head, but it didn't allow for breezes to pass through the helmet without restriction like other helmets I had owned. In comes the Session. The ventilation is better in my opinion and the coverage and protection is still there. I am a big fan!

    Protective, Comfortable and Breathable!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had the Smith Session MIPS Mountain Bike Helmet for about a month now and have ridden in it for a bit over 100 miles so far. I must say that for me, Smith helmets fit the shape of my head very well - just like all of the other snow & mtb helmets I own from Smith, size Large fits great (I wear a 7 1/2-7 5/8 fitted hat). The helmet breathes well on hot days, and I like how the visor can move up and out of the way or down to block direct sun easily, but doesn't move around when the trail is rough. This helmet just replaced my original Smith Vantage, and it's been great so far!

    Nice and lightweight

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Super durable helmet, its comfortable and lightweight. Even on super hot days it doesn't feel like a burden to wear and is a good solid fit.

    Good Choice

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Good fit and feel, I like the look and the MIPS is just an added bonus. Happy with the purchase.

    Lightweight

Great fit just like their ski helmet line. Added protection of mips is peace of mind. Nice and breathable. Great enduro/xc helmet

      The Cool Kid

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Not only can you be cool with the epic ventilation system (15 vents!) of this helmet but you can also look cool with shape design and the awesome colors Smith has chosen. MIPS adds extra protection for your most important organ. The visor is a bit wonky but does the job at a great price point.

visor broke 1st week of use

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

visor broke 1st week of use with hand while adjusting. smith will not send me a new visor. they want me to send them the entire helmet for a warranty process of 3-4 weeks. putting me without a helmet for weeks in the middle of summer. seems to me that a company like smith could just send the customer a new replacement visor no?

My visor broke also... they gave me 200 bucks towards a new helmet. All I have to do is send them a picture of the chin strap cut.
