Smith’s gradual migration into the world of cycling helmets has been an exciting one to watch, as the brand's innovative designs represent a new approach to safety that stands on its own next to tried-and-true classics. Inspired by Smith's Overtake, the all-new Route Helmet comes with a more palatable price tag and an airier design.
Rather than focus exclusively on racers, Smith targeted the Route at commuters and everyday cyclists. That means using less of its Koroyd material and more EPS foam in a design that meets the breathability and ventilation standards of its Aerocore design ethos without sacrificing safety.
Koroyd itself has evoked all manner of comparisons—our favorite being honeycomb—but its safety benefits aren’t a gimmick; according to Smith, the material compresses upon impact to offer better protection than the standard EPS/polycarbonate In-Mold construction that’s been ubiquitous across the helmet industry for years now. Smith still uses EPS in the shell, meaning you’ll still get the protection of the traditional EPS foam in the event of an impact, but the Aerocore construction further boosts its protective properties.
A wealth of 18 vents strategically carved into the helmet feed air through its AirEvac ventilation system to help you shed heat through your head. Smith also includes its one-handed VaporFit adjustment system—which adjusts on-the-go via a quick spin of a dial—and an assortment of breathable X-Static pads made with a cooling synthetic liner help prevent sweat buildup and add cushion to your ride.
- A road helmet with innovative safety technology
- Lighter, more ventilated design ideal for summer rides
- Aerocore material enhances impact protection
- Clean aesthetics are versatile for multiple disciplines
- Adjustable fit and X-Static pads for comfort
Very comfortable helmet
- Fit: Runs large
I bought a size L initially (head size 59.5), and when I got it, the helmet sat too low on my head. Luckily I was able to switch to a size M without any hassle, and I'm so happy I did. The helmet fit is fantastic. Feels like I'm wearing a hat.
I'll buy another
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I recently took a spill at ~30mph going down a hill in the foothills. There is a scrape on the back of helmet from impact (no cracks) & the fit adjuster was broken. However I was astonished from the minimal impact I felt upon my head. It passed my crash test, time to purchase another to replace it. I also cycle daily to commute & wear this helmet. Very comfortable & breathable.
Keeps the noggin safe
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I love this helmet! I have always been a big fan of smith glasses and goggles, but especially their helmets. If you are looking for something that is lightweight, and that breathes well then this is a great option. Half the time I hardly even notice it on my head. There are a lot of other great smith helmet options, but if you need something inexpensive then this is definitely a good option!
Great helmet for a great price
I bought this helmet for my girlfriend in the lime green color. She only wears it when riding her bike around town. She loves the bright green so she can be seen by cars. She also has a smith ski helmet, so she knew the small would fit well, and it does.
Very comfortable helmet with excellent air flow. Sunglasses do become a bit snug but nothing unbearable.
Pretty Good Helmet
This is a pretty good helmet. Fits well, appears to offer great protection and adjustable fit.
Sunglasses interface, or being able to slide/fit sunglasses into the helmet just does not work, at all, even with Smith Pivlock shades. I tried, and they bounce right off. However, expected that, and can't be disappointed.
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I had a forefront before buying this helmet, as it was the most comfortable thing to ever rest on my head, so i thought, why not try the route.
well, i give it a 5 out of 5. significantly more airflow than the forefront, solid retention system, and overall very comfortable.
one thing to notice is the shape and sizing are a little different than the forefront, (for me), and I have a Large forefront and started with a Large Route, I am going to size down on the route to a medium, as it was a bit large and pushing my sunglasses down while riding.
Thanks for the review Bailey, we appreciate the feedback on the new Route!
