No shoulder stretch

  • Size Bought: XL

The quilted part of the top has no stretch and isn't gusseted. When I reach forward (like for double poling when XC skiing) the shoulders are restrictive and the back bunches up awkwardly. Had I more range of movement in the shoulders, I would have loved this product.

Great Product for layering under Shell

I have bought a number of SmartWool products and have been pleased with each one for where I use them. I ordered the Propulsion 60 as I wanted to have more insulation on arms, chest, and particularly- the back. I use this product as base layer under my shell when skiing and I like this because it is light, but warm enough to suffice for most days. The key on this is the insulation wraps to the top of the back, which is great when leaning back on a cold chairlift. I use mainly for skiing, but it would work well for a number of applications where you want a little more insulation on top part of torso and outer arms. Only downside is not full zip on front, but I actually liike the collar and zip function for how I use it.

The Smartwool design involves maximizing the unique traits of the thinly woven wool and wool hybrids, and they have produced this one of a kind top protection for the active person under cold conditions. The chest, neck, and upper arm area are protected against wind, and the smartwool insultion with the soft wool lining the inside keeps your core warm. The lower belly area, lower wrist area, lower arm area, and the back lets in air through the hybrid wool material to ventilate you as sweat is wicked away. It is quite amazing to put it simply as your warming core seems to be ever so slightly cooled off by the wind that creeps in through the lower wrist area. As you rest to catch your breath, your core remains warm and protected from any cold air as the sweat and heat dissipates from your back.

Some of smartwool products are not for those who want to keep warm as they sit quietly in the winter weather. Smartwool designs apparel for active people who are planning to sweat and maintain higher than resting body temperature from activity. This jacket however is more wind proof than my other smartwool products, And it will keep you warm even if you are mostly sedentary.

In conclusion, this jacket will definitely protect you from the cold and ultimately hypothermia as you sweat it out on the trails.

Superb technical gear!!! I bought 2 medium sizes for my 185lbs 5' 11 frame, and the medium size fits me like a glove.

    Cozy as can be

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Extra Large

This is my first piece of clothing built like the Smartwool Propulsion 60. I love the warmth of the lower half and arms, and respect the tough upper half. I've toured in this, and generally either over heat, or freeze, but this jacket seemed to keep my temps regulated. If I am just sitting around, it's quite cozy.

My only gripe, is that the lower half, fits a bit wide. I would have expected Smartwool to have tapered this section in a little, to accommodate for their athletic intent.

Other than that, the quality is great and the warmth is awesome.
