Burly warmth without the bulk.

Give your little shredder a fighting chance against vise winter with the Smartwool Boys' Mid 250 Zip Top. Thanks to its merino wool construction, it regulates his temperature whether he’s chilly on the ski lift or feeling hot after a few runs. The flatlock seams and chin guard offer a smooth fit that moves with him, and the UPF-rating of 50 protects him from harmful rays. And since there’s a 7-inch zip front, he gets to dump excess heat when the sun makes an appearance.

  • Merino wool
  • Semi-fitted
  • Flatlock seams
  • 7in zip mock-neck
  • Chin guard
  • UPF-rated 50

Works for very petite women

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

I have a couple of smartwool 250 zip baselayer shirts in the XS size for women that fit fairly well but the sleeves and torso were always long on me. The kids version in XL is great — the shoulder width is similar to XS women’s, but the sleeves are shorter and hit exactly at my wrist bone, and the shirt length is shorter and ends just below my hip bone instead of covering my whole bottom. For reference, I’m 5’1”, 98 lbs, 24” waist, 32A, have a very short torso, and usually fit into a kids size large in brands such as Patagonia, Lululemon/Ivviva, and Gap. Just note that the hem at the ends of the kids sleeves and bottom of the kids shirt are plain and aren’t the nice wide hem that I find on the women’s version of this shirt. Also, the seams on the kids upper shoulder are straight across the top whereas the women’s version has a separate shoulder panel so the seams aren’t lying where backpack straps rest, even though the fit feels the same. If the women’s XS shirt is long for you, consider trying the kids XL. As for the color, the charcoal heather color is slimming and goes with everything. It’s very warm like a blanket, wicks away moisture, and is not itchy even for people sensitive to wool products.

Thanks for the great feedback!

more great smartwool

We love the smartwool long underwear tops for adults and kids, zip top and crew neck.
They all seem to run almost a size smaller and are definitely snug. This is great for our skinny 11 yr old, but he is already needing size XL in tops and bottoms only in Smartwool brand.
The navy color is as expected--good for boys or girls. Warm, washable, very comfortable. I wish we owned 5!

    won't work for small women

So I have bought smartwool boys bottoms and been successful-I am a 5'2" 100lb woman, but it would not be so with the top. The sleeves are too short. Bummer for me, when will smartwool consider petites?

        How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
