Smartwool Merino 250 Bottom - Women's
SmartwoolMerino 250 Bottom - Women's

More than just a baselayer.

The SmartWool Women's Midweight Bottom has done a great job of keeping you warm and comfortable all day under your ski pants, so why put it away when the lifts close? It makes a fantastic après-ski legging when paired with a skirt (down skirt, perhaps?) and your fun, furry winter boots. In this new guise, you can enjoy the cozy merino wool into the wee hours, before you get up and do it all again the next day. Good thing wool has natural anti-odor properties, since it looks like this bottom is going to be getting a lot of use this vacation.

  • Soft merino midweight bottoms for insulation in cold weather
  • Merino wool wicks moisture and naturally inhibits odor
  • Wide waistband is comfortable and flattering
  • Flatlock seams go easy on your skin
  • UPF 50 protection blocks the sun before it can fry your skin

Terrific base layer

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love these! They are so comfortable and cozy, and should be nice and warm when the cold weather comes around.

These are warm when you need them to be and breathable when you're working hard. Work great when layered or on their own as leggings. Fit true to size.

Love Them!!!

I love my smart wool base layers. I never going snowboarding without them (unless its spring time and hot). They keep me warm. They fit well and they don't smell really bad after a day of use. I highly recommend smart wool base layers.

Warm Base Layer!

I am so glad I got merino wool base layer pants! They are really warm and breath at the same time. The fit on them is really well, and they don't have a lot of stretch to them compared to other leggings because they are wool. So at the beginning of the day they fit really well but at the end of the day they seem more like 3/4 legging and they are baggy. They stretch a little bit throughout the day and don't have that elasticity to maintain there shape, so they become baggy in the butt area and legs. They are still a good fit for skiing though because it is a a base layer, the good thing is that the waist band fits really well and stays up!

So Cozy

These tights are great. I've worn them about 7 times in 40 degree weather as tights with no pants over them. I am pleased with how well they retain their shape, I was concerned that they would become too baggy with wear. They regulate body tempurature well. I wore them to Universal Studios FLorida, temps in the high 70's during the day but dropped to low 40's by night. VERY impressed. Only regret is that I got the heathered grey on sale, which looks like a faded, almost wore-out black. I should have paid the extra $25 and got the black. You live and learn.

Nearly perfect

I love these tights! They are warm and super comfortable in our cool, damp Puget Sound winter. Yes, they do stretch out a little at the knees because they are 100 percent merino wool — they have no spandex to keep their shape. But I washed them on cold and dried them on low, and they went right back to shape. Also, the wide waistband in quite comfortable and not super high. As for fit, I am generally a small or extra-small, and I fit well in the extra-small.

hate the fit!!! waist is very tight and the legs stretch out and do not hold there shape

Hate the fit!

Sadly, I received these as a gift otherwise I would return them or exchange for a larger size. I am a solid size medium across most outdoor brands. I wear a 28/29 in Patagonia pants (aka medium) and a size 6 in Prana for reference. At 6'1" and 155 I have a slender athletic build that is thicker in the glutes and thighs. I own an older pair of these Smartwool bottoms in a medium and a pair of running tights. Both fit well. Unfortunately this fits terribly. The elastic band on the pants is very tight and is uncomfortable to wear even lounging around the house. This photo shows that the rise comes up to just below the belly button, but these sit much lower on my body. Lots of muffin top is produced around the waistband. Muffin top that is not present when wearing any other pant or base layer. The fabric in the legs fits fairly well, even stretches out a little with wear which indicates that this is a correct size for me. I don't think sizing up to a large would solve the stiff elastic problem. I also find that the area around the ankles is quite tight. I struggle getting my feet through them and they feel slightly restrictive around my calves. I noticed that there were small spots that have the beginnings of holes already. Overall I would rate this one star for the fit. I gave two starts because the fabric feels nice against my skin. Based on the fit of these bottoms I would not recommend purchasing this item.

good ski gift

My aunt really enjoys the thermal underwear collection by smartwool and makes a great gift for her. Great for wearing as a baselayer while skiing or spending time outdoors in the winter. Slim enough to wear under casual pants as well. Great product that will get good use.

Great Wool Leggings

These leggings are so soft, not itchy like some wool knits. They are a great fit and have a high waist band. They are great for lounging or under skinny jeans.

They Get Low, Quick

I really wanted to like these. I love wool, tend to love Smartwool, but these just missed the mark.

The waistband is the first issue--it is quite wide and stiff, making it rather uncomfortable when wearing for an extended time. The fabric itself is very comfortable and warm, but sags/gets stretched out really quick. I had these as a baselayer on a backpacking expedition this summer, and ended up wearing them pretty infrequently with how quickly they would stretch out.

Meh.

I am a big fan of Smartwool products, but did not like the fit on this one. The waistband itself is rather snug, while the rest of the pant is on the loose side. I prefer a uniform fit.

Not so comfy

I guess I couldn't tell from the photo, but I thought I might be able to wear these under a casual dress. But they are, in fact, a base layer meant to be hidden with different color stitching that is not black. The waistband is thick and tight, so I wouldn't want a smaller size. But I could tell the knees would stretch out and quickly get baggy in the back. Not so hot. Bit itchy too.

Close enough, runs small though.

I gave these to a friend for her winter adventures and she said that they do what they need to essentially do. Sadly, they run a bit small and don't have much stretch. They are also a bit thinner than she would've liked for how cold it was outside. They did help keep her warmer than she would've been though. If she was too only wear one layer, though, she would've picked thicker bottoms.

Runs small, not stretchy

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Ordered in small but run very small, like an xs. Other smartwool baselayers are more stretchy than this one. If you are looking for very snug fit, order your size or one up.

Smartwool = Itchy

Fabric was so rough and itchy it made my skin break out. Fit was perfect though.

Quality has gone down, unfortunately.

I used to wear smartwool everything and I've had socks and other layers that have lasted a decade. I bought these summer 2016, have worn them twice (sleeping in a tent)_and they now have 3 holes in them. It's not like they are too tight. They're actually slightly too big. I would not recommend them.

I wear these skiing and ice climbing under a pair of insulated pants. They are breathable and do not collect much moisture. They keep me nice and toasty on chilly winter days! Great mobility. They do stretch out a tad bit during wear but regain shape after being put into the dryer.

Thin and get stretched out

I ordered these expecting a midweight legging; however, they are very lightweight and thin. I bought them on sale for 40% off, and had I payed full price I would have most definitely returned them. I'm still slightly upset at having payed what I did. After a few hours of wear, the leggings get baggy/saggy in the knees and butt from sitting/moving around.
