Merino 250 Balaclava
Visibility is bad enough on storm days. The SmartWool Merino 250 Balaclava defends your head and neck from blustery snow without decreasing your field of vision. Constructed with merino wool, this balaclava keeps you toasty while interlock knitting minimizes chaffing. The super-soft fabric feels wonderful on your face and slides easily under helmets and goggles, so you’ll forget it’s there while chasing fresh powder.

A Staple for Cold Weather Outtings
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I've put it through its paces in temps down to 15°F, dealing with mist, sleet, wind, and straight-up harsh winter conditions on multiple snowshoe trips. It does an excellent job shielding my face—keeping out the bite of wind, freezing rain, and sleet without feeling restrictive. The 100% Merino wool construction shines here: it's naturally breathable, wicks moisture away effectively, and stays insulating even when things get damp from sweat or precipitation. One thing I've noticed (and this happens with pretty much every buff or balaclava I've tried, not just this one): once it saturates from your breath moisture, it gets a bit limp and starts to sag slightly. It's not a flaw unique to Smartwool—it's just physics with moisture-heavy fabrics in cold air—but it's repeatable and worth mentioning if you're expecting a super structured fit all day long. That said, even when sweaty or wet, it keeps performing: maintaining warmth, protecting from the cold, and not turning clammy like some synthetics might. That's exactly why I chose Merino over synthetic options for this piece—the priority is reliable warmth and breathability in variable, high-output winter activity, not ultra-quick drying. It's super lightweight, packs down small, and lives in my pack as essential kit for alpine hikes and snowshoeing when conditions turn nasty. No bulk under a helmet or hood, good peripheral vision, and that classic soft Merino feel against the skin. Overall, this is a solid, no-regrets addition for shoulder-season or full-on winter face coverage in the PNW. If you're after something that prioritizes warmth retention and natural performance over being the lightest/fastest-drying option, the Smartwool Merino 250 Balaclava delivers. Highly recommend for anyone hitting the trails in cold, wet, windy weather!

Kept me warm!
I’m so glad for this purchase! Used for skiing and fit well under my helmet. No extra bulk. Kept me warm, even when the chin was damp. I didn’t experience any itchiness.

Thin material and tight fit
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it
Material was much thinner than expected for 250 weight, and size was much too tight for my head. I returned it.
