Backpack style hydration packs are fine most of the time, however, if it’s a hot summer ride or you just appreciate getting the weight lower a hip pack is hard to beat. Hip packs aren't without their shortcomings either though, and without shoulder straps, they tend to shift around unless the waist belt is really cinched down uncomfortably tight. But with the refined design of the Spyder from SciCon, you can get the comfort of a hip pack with the security of a backpack.
The Spyder has a larger main compartment with plenty of room to carry water, tools, snacks, and a map handy for your ride, and with its removable shoulder straps and padded back panel, it sits low on your back so it can breathe and the center of gravity is lower. Two external straps allow you to keep a shell close at hand if things get chilly or it begins to rain. The net helmet holder is a nice touch for travel or to store it on a long, extended climb. Lastly, the reflective piping is helpful in keeping you visible when heading back to the trailhead after a long day of riding.
