Salomon X-Mission 3 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

A hearty bowl of awesome.

Not so different than the way you consume a bowl of hearty and savory beef stew after having spent the day out in the cold, the Salomon Men's X-Mission 3 Trail Running Shoe gobbles crusty trails for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Built to crush the inclines and ensure steady footing on the descent, this reimagined trail runner features a newly renovated high abrasion and wet traction Contagrip sole which utilizes strategically placed lugs and high density tread. This ultimately encourages paramount stability and grip when you need it the most. The breathable open mesh, durable Quicklace drawcord system, and SensiFIT system provides a comfortable, locked down fit but without the frequent friction hot spots and unsavory blisters. Not to mention, the X-Mission 3 is equipped with neutral support, SensiFlex, asymmetrical heel counter, and EVA injected midsole which cater to a smooth and comfortable ride.

Like Slippers

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I got these as a gift for my brother and this is what he had to say:

These shoes are like slippers! Very comfortable and offer good support for running. The toe box is a little loose feeling, but they do not feel sloppy. I would recommend for people with wider feet.

Nice

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

These Salomons are good looking and super comfortable. They run a little bit Small, I had to get a 1/2 size bigger than I normally wear.

Solid Shoe!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 10

The X-Mission 3's have performed beautifully. I have used these as my primary hiking and trail running shoe this summer season. The ContaGrip doesn't lack grip or stability in rough or wet terrains and the Quicklace system makes them easy to tighten up or loosen in given circumstances. I typically wear a 10-10.5 and purchased the 10 in these are they fit great. Overall I definitely recommend!

Great all around shoe

The his shoe gives the right combination of weight, traction, cushion and durability. I am a repeat user of these trail shoes. Other shoes are too soft and unstable on the trail and/or slippery. These bad boys stick to the ground and provide the right balance between cushion and performance. My feet are not tired after long runs and yet I feel very stable and glued to the trail. Given the lightness they work fine if you have to run on a road to get to the trail..

I am NOT a runner.

(Got this as a gift for my brother -- Here's what he has to say!) I prefer trail runners as my lightweight hikers. I cannot give any feedback as to how they perform as running shoes, but I CAN give feedback as to how they fit, feel, and function. I just got these to replace a pair of XR Mission 1 Salomons (an earlier generation of this shoe) that have been my go-to hikers for four years. I love Salomons because they generally fit my feet like a glove. My foot is just about as average as it gets. Average width, average to slightly high arch, and Salomons have always fit well. These are no exception. They felt familiar right out of the box. I like the new tread pattern on these compared to the XR's, and they feel a little lighter but slightly stiffer in the sole. It's hard to say how they will break in as they get wear, but they're comfy and functional for what I need them for. And if anyone is unfamiliar with the kevlar chord quicklace, you shouldn't be... it's a game changer.

Best Running Shoes I've owned

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I love these shoes, they fit my feet perfectly. I run about 50/50 trail to road and these work really well on both. I won't claim to be a running fanatic so I haven't logged a huge number of miles on these yet, but so far these look about the same as when I bought them. If you have a narrow foot with a high arch, these are the shoes for you.

Lightweight, breathable

A great distance shoe for a trail where a road shoe would be sufficient but you want a little more support and protection

Great shoe!

Bought these as a gift for my buddy. Loved the fit around the heel of the shoe. Also was blown away by how easy and comfortable the quicklace is. Walked them around the house a bit and fell in love with them.

OK, not great for my purposes

Summary - great, lightweight shoe for fire roads and sandy trails. Not so great on rocky or uneven terrain. I use them for running on marked trails in the east bay hills of San Francisco. The trails are well maintained, but single track and fairly rugged in places.

Pro:
lightweight
Great, grippy sole
Fits my wide feet pretty well
The lacing system works well

Con:
Pretty flexible at the forefoot and not much torsional stiffness - not great on rocky or heavily rooted trails
The green is really ugly
The soles are so grippy that they occasionally catch when going over tree roots.

Narrow toe box

Strong sole and solid lacing system. Grippy with great tread. Tongue stays in place. Toe box is a little too narrow for me. Insoles leave a little to be desired.

Do very well with wide feet. I have large and wide feet, and these shoes seem to be more comfortable out of the box than any other trail running shoes I have tried(Brooks, New Balance). Those shoes did well, but were not as immediately comfortable as the Salomon’s. The sole is very wide at the heal and forefoot, providing great stability, I use these as my primary backpacking/hiking shoe. I also like the quick lace system, no laces wearing out or becoming untied.

I've been wearing xr missions for about 2 years and love them! They were super durable, comfortable, and functional. The main differences I see from the xr mission to the x mission is the sole is different, it doesn't have the big pad on the upper right like the xr but I can't feel much of a difference with it not there. Also it seems to be a tad narrower. And lastly they are substantially lighter, especially on the feet, major difference. These shoes are awesome and I highly recommend.
