Tread heavy.

You may subscribe to a tread lightly philosophy when you're in the backcountry, but you're also about sure-footed traction and covering a lot of ground. The Salomon Men's X Alp Mid LTR GTX Boot delivers with an aggressive sole, reinforced upper, and waterproof Gore-Tex membrane. And when your route consists of some off-trail exploration, the gusseted tongue, aggressive sole, and molded midsole keeps brush, small rocks, and rugged terrain from slowing your pace as you move through the mountains.

  • A trail-ready boot for backpacking and hiking
  • Waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex membrane for wet trails
  • Split-suede upper withstands wear from rugged terrain
  • Gusseted tongue keeps hitchhikers out of socks
  • Protective heel cap offers stability and protection
  • Molded midsole disperses impact from rocks and roots
  • Protective toe cap protects upper from scuffs
  • Sole grips to variable surfaces on and off trail

Decent and solid performer

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

Comfortable footbed and protective uppers with well structured support for the ankle. Had to order up a full size for a comfortable fit. Standard lacing configuration, nothing blazingly fast nor too complicated. Requires what is probably normal breaking in effort and fitting time. Gore-Tex lining seems to do it's job thus far, feet stay dry and warm. The only thing that compromises ease of use is the tongue. The fabric moisture shield on the upper section doesn't always fold compactly and creates a painful rubbing line vertically down the ankle. And this is with loose to moderately tight lacing, nothing extreme. Many times I've had to undo and carefully fold and position the fabric and then re-lace the boot. It certainly lengthens the time to get mounted and going. Other than that they wear well and appear to be solidly constructed.

First take on the boots

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 13

I just ordered these boots about 2 weeks ago and they are great. Working on breaking them in good on lunch hour hikes and walk and so far they are very comfortable, the lacing is great you can tie them so tight your foot goes numb or just tight enough to make them comfortable as wear around boots. I'm super excited to use them hunting and see how they do off the trail and pavement.

Burly Backpacking Boots

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size

Picked these up for my brother and he's very happy with them so far. Definitely a heavy duty backpacking boot that would be too much for day hikes. Stiff sole and toe cap on these as well.

Would this boot be recommended for backpacking? 30lb + pack weight. Thx

I would say it would be a great shoe for that as long as you're in the alpine line or under 10K feet.
