Salomon sense ride 4

Excellent footwear from Salomon for trail running on technical terrain and trails. They fit well to the shape of the foot, creating good stability when descending on technical and oily terrain, with good grip, thanks to its studded sole and manufacturing component. I recommend them to any type of mountain runner, from the most experienced or elite, to the most amateur who is beginning outdoor activities with contact with nature.

Least durable shoe I've ever owned

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I truly mean it, I've worn many pairs of shoes. These are the worst, and I can't describe them in any other way than disappointing. I am 6'3" 170lbs, healthy human being who doesn't drag his feet, and somehow I wore through the sole of the shoe in well under a year. I've honestly never even gone trail running in these, I use them to walk my dog...on the sidewalk. I can't imagine how fast these would fall apart running off road. As you can see in the picture, there is no tread left under the ball of the foot or the heel (the actual contact points). In the case of the heel, I've not only worn through the tread and the rubber behind that, I've worn through the actual core of the shoe! And again, I don't even run!

Not for All Trail Running

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I've run over 30 miles in these shoes since receiving them a week ago and feel comfortable enough to share my experience. These shoes have a lot of positive features but there is a downside that some folks need to be aware of. For those looking to run on rugged terrain/trails, you'll want to look at other shoe options. If you're looking to run on light trails (i.e. gravel, dirt) and/or roads, these could be one of the best options out there. I run on trails where some trails contain a lot of exposed rocks and roots so I was looking for a shoe that had decent structure and cushion to handle the rugged terrain. With these shoes, you feel EVERYTHING. There is very little cushioning. There is also very little lateral/ankle support so making a lot of lateral movements is challenging. In fact, I rolled an ankle on mile 3 with these shoes. To be honest, I prefer to wear my asics gel nimbus on the more rugged trails and stick to these shoes on lighter trails and/or trails with drastic elevation change. I want to make it clear that these shoes are very good on light trails. They're definitely one of the best out there in a light trail / road environment. If I were to score these shoes more thoroughly, here's what I would give them (out of 5; 5 being optimal): Quality - 4 Durability - TBD (so far no apparent issues) Immediate comfort - 4 Running comfort - 2 (disclaimer: I use these on light and rugged trails; On light trails only, I would give this a 4) Support (lateral) - 1 Weight - 4 (pretty light) Cushion - 1 Traction - 4

Great so far

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have about 20 miles on these in sand/ packed trail environment including a couple miles in mud. So far, I really like them but a few other reviewers quibbles are true. They do tend to loosen up, but I found if I put them on, walk around for a bit, then tighten again they hold their position. As far as getting the laces in the garage, you just need to be specific about how you lace them up. Grab the loop on the garage with one hand and hold it up while pulling the laces tight with the other. This keeps the flap from getting caught under the laces. These are my first pair of actual trail shoes and I like them compared to the ASICS road shoes I've worn for years. I wanted something for a muddy run I do every year for better traction and these seem to fit the bill while also being able to go on road occasionally without worrying about grinding off the soles.

Great shoe but

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I liked these shoes and had big hope for them. When trying them on they felt great except for the right shoe. Salmon missed one of the lace holes so it doesn't tighten correctly. Have to send back.

Fair, But the Speedcross Is Much Better

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

This shoe is an adequate trail running shoe, but it feels less stable and secure than the Salomon Speedcross. Additionally, as noted in a prior review, there isn't a "pocket" in the shoe tongue for the pull tab for the laces. Instead, I have to tuck the tab into the bottom of the lacing system near the toe box. I do not like this shoe enough to buy another pair, and I will be going back to the Speedcross for my next pair of trail running shoes.

Great shoe but.....

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I love the way that this shoe feels, but the lace pouch design is flawed. There is no way to get the closure system into the pouch when everything is cinched down. I've tried tucking the excess into the shoe, etc, but they always come out. Am I doing something wrong?

Popping Sound

The shoe feels great but is noisy. The upper pops when it is flexed. You can hear it walking or running. This is the second pair where I've experienced this and my history with the first pair is that the noise does NOT go away with break-in. Otherwise, the fit is perfect with 1/2 size down from other shoes. I'm looking forward to next year's version with this problem being fixed.

Upgrade from SR 3

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I?ve put about 100 miles in on the Sense Ride 4 and so far so good! It feels more responsive and lighter than the Sense Ride 3 and has awesome protection from rocks and other debris. Fit is exactly what it says on the Salomon site. A little bit looser than the S/Lab line but measurements are still dead on. This tends to be my mid-mileage training shoe for trails that aren?t super technical and it works great for that!

Jack of all trades

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

The Sense Ride 4 is a perfect shoe for all around trails conditions. I would say it runs true to size I am typically a size 10 across-the-board and Salomon shoes. It's a great work horse shoe. If you just want to log miles or if you want to train a little bit more up-tempo. I've had the previous sense rides and I think this one is a great improvement as well even though I enjoyed the previous models.
