Salomon MTN Lab Helmet

Safety and comfort for alpine adventures.

For you, the thrill of going down the mountain isn't enough—the journey to the top is just as important. People like you are the reason Salomon created the Mountain Lab Helmet. Weighing in at just 300 grams, this incredibly lightweight helmet is certified to the highest skiing and mountaineering standards to keep you safe on every step of your journey.

Its unique construction and patented EPS 4D foam keeps this helmet ridiculously light while still exceeding safety standards. A merino wool blend lining throughout the interior of the helmet manages moisture, regulates temperature, and naturally resists odor to keep you comfy whether you're climbing up or enjoying the ride down. Active ventilation allows you to control the amount of airflow coming it. Keep the vents wide open when it's sunny and warm, or close them up during a storm. A Custom Dial allows you to adjust the fit so your helmet doesn't slip.

Really Awesome Helment

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great helmet for a great price. It is lightweight with lots of features. Also, the head adjustability straps allows for ideal fitting. I wound up removing the inner liner so I could wear my beanie with it and it fits great. I am also able to put my googles underneath my helmet without the liner, which is a big plus from me. Took a tumble the other day, and this baby kept my brain in place. I would highly recommend it!

Incorrect weight and not versatile

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I was looking to add a lightweight ski and climbing helemt to my backcountry ski kit. First, in a size large, this helmet is 420 grams (about 15 ounces) which is both heavier than advertised and makes it on par with numerous other ski helmets. The kiss of death for me was that I couldn't get the helmet to fit right with the ear flaps removed. It was uncomfortable both over a brimmed hat as well as a beanie. Word on the street was that they were going to make a summertime liner for this helmet, but I haven't seen it yet. That being said, if you are going going to ski with this helmet using the ear flaps and need something for both climbing and skiing it might work for you.

Supposedly they are coming out with a summer liner that doesn't have ear flaps.

Thanks for this, JayBo.

any word on if/when there will be a summer liner (no ear flaps) available for purchase any time soon?

Noggin Protection at its best

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

In pursuing more alpine objectives that involves a lot of work on the way up, but rewarding with some sweet turns on the way down, I was in the market for a good helmet that served two purposes. I didn't like the look of the K2 that came out last year and was happy to see more companies producing dual certified helmets for 2016. I tend to prefer lighter weight on my head even though that is what is protecting my head, odd I know, but it does make a difference on long days. I opted for the MTN Lab after reading very limited reviews and figured I should give it a shot. This thing is light. How light, I don't know. I don't own a gram scale, but my head after a long day says it is light. The head lamp clips are great for the dawn patrol missions or the hut approaches in the cover of darkness. The merino wool liner is nice and definitely helps keep the head warm on the frigid days and the venting is great for when you need to blow off some steam. The fit is great and it is comfortable to wear.

I wear a medium pretty much across the board in all helmets. From the Smith Vantage and Variant Ski, Smith Forefront and various Sworks bike helmets, to the Black Diamond Vapor and Vector climbing helmets.

Noggin Protection at its best

nice helmet, but heavier than 300g

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Seems like a great product overall, but a size medium weighs in at 374g (340g for shell only after removing liner) on a calibrated scale, not the 300g that Salomon claims. Normally I would say who cares, but Salomon seem to be pushing the lightweight nature of this product and I feel like over 10% error is a bit misleading. Also, you can't adjust the strap while wearing it due to the Velcro thing that wraps around it. Prefer Giro's strap slightly more. Seems to breathe well when touring, and fit is comfortable.

Unanswered Question

Do you have more specific info on the sizing? What size head does a large fit? Thanks.

Do it all Dome Protector

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This helmet is now my go to when I'm out in the backcountry. There are so many features that make this the perfect alpine helmet.

First off, it's both ski and climb certified so it's perfect for your multi-sport days and trips. While you're climbing up the ultralight and breathable merino wool liner keeps you cool and comfortable. I found the fit to be very comfortable and the helmet can easily fit on a bare head or over a hood/hat. Buckles and dials are easy to use with gloves on too.

But this helmet isn't just about going up, the thing offers bomber protection for the way down too. Salomon designed "4D foam" for this helmet. Basically the interior of the helmet is channeled out to better absorb impacts and rotations. The end result is a helmet that is great at protecting from rockfall as well as falls while skiing where you may roll or tomahawk.

Oh yeah, and the thing is absurdly light. I mean *really* light.

Contact me directly to ask more about the helmet or find out what other gear I'm excited about for this season.

How this helmet pairs with goggles like Scott LCG, Smith I/OX and I/O7? Any recommends on Salomon's goggles?

Hey Andriy,

The goggle will pair up well with any of the goggles that you have listed. Salomon has a few new goggles in their line up - I'd personally pair the helmet with the Salomon X Max Goggle

Item # SAL00J7. They come with an extra lense, and also are pretty simple to change out lenses!
