Killer insulated jacket!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

This jacket is a great mix of warmth and breathability. I use it a ton in spring and fall for cool mornings and evenings and as a layering piece in winter. Its also sharp enough to wear around town. It has some cool angular stitch lines that set it apart from other similar pieces. Love the snug, stretchy, athletic fit.

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. The Salewa Ortles Hybrid 2 Hooded Insulated Jacket is a great multipurpose breathable jacket. I have used it for backcountry and in-area skiing, and biking into work on cold mornings. I have also worn it on windy, cool days hiking out to the crag. I have the jacket in black. It is a stylish Italian jacket so it is prefect to wear into work after hopping off of your bike.

The large size is an excellent fit for me. I typically wear a large though in some brands I am in between a medium and a large. The insulated hood is quite warm and comes in handy if you happen to forget your hat, or can allow you to leave your hat behind. The stretch inserts are a very good feature which allow for ease of movement. The left-handed zipper is a new twist for me that have taken some getting used to. I was on a climbing trip to Red Rocks this past February, and the weather turned cold and windy, and climbing conditions were frigid. The Ortles Hybrid 2 Hooded Insulated Jacket would have been the perfect jacket for that trip!

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. I've always loved Salewa shoes, so I was stoked to have a chance to test the Salewa Ortles Hybrid 2 hooded jacket this winter, and I love it! I've used this jacket primarily for backcountry skiing and mountaineering in the Wasatch. The Ortles Hybrid 2 breathes well while skinning up the mountain, but at the same time, the jacket is still windproof and it keeps the cold out. I often overheat while skinning/climbing, and I usually end up taking my jackets off because I'm sweating. The Ortles Hybrid 2 solves my overheating problem while doing aerobic activities, and it's really water resistant while it's snowing.

For sizing comparison, I feel like the Ortles jacket has a more athletic/slimmer cut than a Patagonia Nano Puff or Micro Puff, and I would say that the Salewa jacket sizing is similar to an Arc'teryx Atom LT jacket. I wear a XL in the Ortles jacket and Atom LT jacket and a size Large in Patagonia jackets.

I really love the fitted hood and ergonomic sleeves on the Salewa Ortles Hybrid 2, which seems unique to this jacket. Overall, the jacket is very well constructed, durable, and abrasion resistant. I've taken falls on rocks while wearing the jacket and it still looks brand new. I've got this jacket in the black color and it has more of a matte black finish, which I like because it doesn't look like I'm wearing a shiny garbage bag. I love this jacket and I'll be wanting it in additional colors!

Kyle Livingston is my Backcountry Gearhead and he really helped me out with sizing this jacket right the first time as he has tons of experience comparing the top brands. Thanks Kyle!

This is the name of the game. Versatility.
I lent it to my brother to go climbing, came back without scuffs. Ski tour, no stink. cold trail runs in the snow, perfect regulation. The arms and sides are a super durable stretchy material, that can handle rocks and packs. The core is a primaloft but in a very light construction, perfect for high activity levels in biting cold, or low activity in medium cold.
