Why We Like The Mountain Trainer GTX Hiking Shoe

The Salewa Men's Mountain Trainer GTX Hiking Shoe lives for ridgeline scrambles and fast ascents up exposed routes. Taking all the burly ingredients of Salewa's mountaineering boots and implementing them in a low-top hiking shoe, the Mountain Trainer delivers all the rigidity and support you'd expect from an alpine boot but in a more nimble design.

A True Winner

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have worn this shoe on and off for almost two years and I have no complaints. It has a good grip, a very strong sole and still only showing light wear. The only thing wearing out is the shoe lace. The tongue of the shoe does a great job keeping grit out of the shoe and the sole performs well walking over small to medium rocky ground. The shoe breaths very well and it is waterproof for sure, all thanks to constructed with real Goretex. Plus they looks good. I have not put it though the wringer but I have worn it many times in all terrains to prove its versatility. A winner

Good shoes, but...

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

These are nice shoes, but there's a caveat. If you ever need to replace the laces, be aware that Salewa doesn't stock orange replacement laces - just black ones. Big deal? Maybe. More importantly, the way the shoes are designed - without standard eyelets - you can't re-lace the shoes yourself without an engineering degree and a full set of power tools. And Salewa made it clear to me that they don't care - when I was lucky enough to actually get in touch with them. Bottom line? They should have proper replacement laces available, they should find a new shoe designer and they should pick up the phone and solve problems when loyal customers call.

Not changed for the better for me

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I have an older pair of Mountain Trainers that aren?t waterproof and that can be finicky to get my heels locked in. I decided to give these a try, hoping that the fit would be the same or better. Nope! The heel counter is even shallower, not even coming close to going over the curve of my heel, and I don?t know WHAT the funky tongue is all about. There?s barely enough lace to tie. Overall the shoe feels slightly lower volume, just not what I need. Looks like I?ll be using my older pair for another year. 3 stars because they ARE good shoes, just apparently meant for people with 4 toes.

Sizing

The items runs a bit small. I typically wear a size 12 in virtually all of my footwear and this one is closer to 1/2 size up. Product looked decent but unsure how I like the tongue, feels like it doesn't pull up as far as others. Returned due to lack of size 12.5 and customer svc was solid as usual.

Don?t take out shoelace.

I planned to put lock laces in the shoes like I did with my old pair, but the lock laces were to thick. I had a frustrating experience putting the original laces back with tweezers. The longevity of the shoe seems to be limited to the strength of the laces.
