One Year, One Pair of Pants

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 30/30

I just got home from a year-long road trip driving from San Francisco to the Southern tip of South America in Ushuaia, Argentina. On that trip, I climbed 6000M peaks in the Andes, climbed canyon walls in Colombia, hiked hundreds of miles and put my gear through a hell of a lot of abuse. This was my only pair of pants. I have a slim build, so most hiking/outdoors pants that are rugged enough to stand up to the tests of harsh environments look like billowy disco pants on me. These, however, fit like a pair of jeans but they have the stretch and functionality to move smoothly through any environment. The thigh pocket is a perfect spot to stash your phone or wallet to protect it while hiking or climbing, with the added value that it's pickpocket proof for traveling. These pants are also comfortable in any temperature from scorching tropical jungle to freezing Andean altiplano (trust me). The combination of function and style is so great that you can wear them on a hike during the day and at a club that night. There are so many options in terms of lower body wear for the various outdoor activities that we all enjoy, but I know that if I could only have one pair of pants for life both inside and outdoors these would be the ones.

One Year, One Pair of Pants

Favorite thing I own. period.

Giving this product a 5-star makes me regret every other 5-star I've given in the past, because these RR pants far outperform them. The Alpine pants strike the perfect balance between durability and flexibility, with the fit being tapered (never inhibiting movement during a climbing move or leap you're making while out on a stroll. I've dragged my older pair across limestone and through bushwacks and haven't shown wear over many seasons. Possibly the greatest plus is the drawcord at the bottom of the pant which allows you either to convert them on hot days, or to tighten over your boots when you may be getting twings or dust inside. Did I mention that they are water repellent and generally stay very clean even after abuse?

Love these pants. Stood up to multiple climbing excursions on tough limestone, long slides on wet sandstone canyoneering and have even survived plenty of MTB adventures as well. At the end of it wash 'em clean of the mud you smeared all over and then head to dinner with the step parents. This will be my second pair of the charcoal and will definitely be picking up a pair of the khaki color as well. Do yourself a favor and get these pants.
Sizing: I run tall and slim so I picked up a 30 with a 32 inseam and they fit great. They do stretch some after frequent ware so don't be afraid to wash in warm water as you break them in.
