Next-level comfort for cold weather adventures.

When you're on the move in cold weather, stay warm—but not too warm—in the Rab Men's Alpha Direct Insulated Jacket. Designed to be used as either an outer layer or a mid-layer, it takes advantage of Polartec Alpha Direct technology to keep you warm while offering unmatched breathability, so you stay comfortable through a wide range of temperatures.

Alpha Direct insulation eliminates the need for a liner fabric, so you get more unimpeded airflow (not to mention less weight and bulk) without sacrificing warmth. A water-resistant outer fabric makes short work of light rain and snow, and the slim fit allows you to comfortably wear this jacket underneath a technical shell when the weather is extra rough.

  • Built for spring-to-fall active alpine pursuits
  • Light, water-resistant shell fabric
  • Alpha Direct insulation allows unprecedented breathability
  • Under-hood helmet with tricot-lined collar
  • Slim fit for comfortable layering
  • Stretch fleece cuffs for uninhibited mobility
  • Drawcord at hem seals out chilly gusts
  • Rab is a British company that specializes in gear for the mountains

Great all around

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

This jacket does it all. It's warm, light, and breathable under low to moderate activity, and doesn't easily get too hot or stuffy under higher activity. Perfect for mixed conditions hiking or trail riding. DWR works as well as a soft shell, hood is insulated and works either on or zipped up like a neck tube.

Slim fit like you'd expect from European brands, size up if you're used to more room in your garments. Somehow the sleeves are both long enough to cover your hands while using the thumbholes, but not too long or bunchy without. Sleeves are trim, so bulky layers underneath won't fit well, but the Alpha is warm and soft throughout which makes this the perfect jacket to throw on over a T-shirt or baselayer.

Dislikes: I would appreciate a second chest/Napoleon pocket and an interior pocket. The tab that retains the hood when rolled gets in the way of the hanger loop. I wouldn't mind a small pit zip because mechanical ventilation is nice, but opening the side pockets and main zipper serve OK for this on a bike.

Overall it's typically the one I reach for every day, basically replaced most of my other jackets.

So versatile

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

It lives up to the hype. The jacket regulates temperature like nothing else I've owned. So far, I've had it down to 30 with plenty of warmth with only a thin baselayer underneath, but I'll also wear it into the 60s as it doesn't overheat. It hasn't mattered if I've been hoofing up to 12,000 ft or sitting around. It's warm but comfortable regardless. I've been impressed by the outer as well as it has held up in some pretty heavy rain and wind. I left it lying around in the rain and the insulation dried very quickly as well. Rab nailed the details with large hand pockets, a secure hood despite not having a cinch, and a true fit. The sleeves are even sized perfectly for me so the stretchy thumb loops are actually useful. I'm 5'9, 150, usually between S/M, and a M here is spot on.

Favorite Jacket I Own!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Small

This jacket does it all. Wind resistant, water resistant, breathable, WARM, and perfect for all kinds of outdoor activities. The fit is perfect. Very contoured through the torso, plenty of length in the arms, and really becomes a part of you when you wear it. If you want a little more room, order a size up. This is my second Rab jacket, and their sizing is not loose and forgiving like other brands. It's fitted in comparison, so I'll say it "runs small."

Phenomenal in cold weather

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great fit, trim in the torso so it's not in the way when wearing a harness, and stay tucked in. Long enough sleeves it won't ride up and over gloves if you're reaching for a hold or tool placement.

The Alpha insulation actually breathes---amazing, prior to wearing this jacket, I never skinned or did approaches in an insulated jacket. The Alpha Direct changed all that---Deep vent pockets help shed heat, but the interior pile and Alpha insulation breathes just enough you can move comfortably in cold weather. I'm usually overheated and this thing is awesome---leading a strenuous pitch of ice or skinning below 20F--I was psyched!

Another great Rab jacket--true to fit, breathes well, dries quickly (wore it on a drippy ice climb), but also zip up and offer superb warmth on the down--awesome.

Phenomenal in cold weather

nice pic but I can't see the jacket.

nice pic but I can't see the jacket.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

Amazing jacket with unbelievable insulation. You can almost see through it, but the Alpha Direct is warm enough, by itself, no base layer, at forty degrees F, on a bicycle to be comfortable. Snug fit so the XL worked better for sleeve length and torso length than the L. The thumb holes, the draw cord, the snug hood all make it a wonderful jacket, but the insulation is the knock out!
