Profile Design is a name recognized for years in triathlon and Ironman circles as a leader in aerobars and hydration systems. The brand has recently taken their knowledge of aerodynamics and carbon construction and has applied it to wheels. The 58/TwentyFour Carbon Clincher Disc Wheelset is a hand-built wheelset designed to turbocharge your disc brake steed.
Profile utilized Computation Fluid Dynamics and wind tunnel testing to hone the development of the rim shape in an effort to improve aerodynamics and handling in crosswinds. Course modeling of high-profile race venues further aided in rim design and is applicable in actual conditions we are likely to see on the road and not just in a wind tunnel. The 58 in the model name references the 58mm depth both the front and rear rim share. That depth hits a pretty sweet spot for keeping the rims fairly light for quick accelerations and climbing while still offering an aero boost and ease of handling if you find yourself on the windy roads of the Queen K in October. The Twenty Four represents the external rim which sits at 24mm wide. We feel this too is a pretty happy medium as it offers great support for 25mm tires that we find ourselves running these days. This helps support the tire in high-speed cornering situations and provides nearly parallel sidewalls thus improving aerodynamics without adding too much to the frontal area.
It is hard to deny the increase of disc brake road and tri bikes emerging on the market and for good reason. The weight gains and aerodynamic losses going to disc are near negligible and the idea of having brakes that are consistent and work in all conditions are certainly appealing. Having disc brakes for mountain and cross bikes are pretty much non-negotiable and we expect this to be the case for road and tri bikes within the next few years. If you were an early adapter of disc and you are looking for a performance upgrade on you bike, give the 58/TwentyFour Carbon Clincher Disc a serious look.
A fast aero rim is useless unless it's paired with other high quality wheel components. Profile didn't skimp here at all. The hub shells are machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and offer great strength and durability. Sealed cartridge bearings offer years of maintenance free riding. The Shimano HG freehub is compatible with Shimano 11-speed systems and with the included spacer, will work with 9/10 speed systems as well. Campy freehubs are available separately. The wheels come setup for quick release use but adapters are available for thru-axle frames and forks. Sapim's CX-Ray spokes join the rim and hubs together. These spokes are renowned for being light enough for climbing wheels yet strong enough to handle DH abuse.
