The Petzl Ride Ice Axe is designed for exactly that moment, when the skin track tilts up, the snow firms into ice, and you need something in your pack that can handle real consequences without slowing you down to carry it.

At just 8.5 ounces and 45 centimeters, the Ride disappears into your pack until the route demands it. Petzl built the all-steel head to deliver performance on par with a full-size axe, with a pick tapered to 3mm at the tip for clean penetration on hardpack and glaciated terrain. The curved shaft and machined grip give you control when a slip needs to stop fast, and the beveled spike means you can stow this axe inside your bag rather than lashing it to the outside, keeping snag risk low and your gear intact.
