That’s why Harvey Gross established the Penfield Manufacturing Company in 1975. Gross recognized the power of down-insulated outerwear to provide protection from bitter cold, and based his new company out of an old textile mill in Hudson to produce Penfield's high-quality down-filled garments.<br><br>Penfield's first collection consisted of four key outerwear pieces, all made from lightweight ripstop nylon fabric and stuffed with generous amounts of lofty down to create Penfield’s signature “puffy” look.  Throughout the following 40 years, Penfield never veered far from its founding mission and aesthetic—simple, highly functional jackets, vests, apparel, and accessories for men, women, and children that embody the rugged, down-to-earth New England aesthetic.<br><br>Since 1975, Penfield has expanded into international markets, bringing this uniquely American look overseas. It has engaged in high-profile collaborations and continued to innovate, all the while preserving its unfaltering commitment to quality, function, and style.
