Tropic Comfort II Hooded Shirt

A sunny day out on the water would be absolutely perfect if it wasn't for the constant bite of the sun on your back, but you can keep the bite on your line by covering up with the Patagonia Tropic Comfort II Hooded Shirt. This ultralight and quick-drying hoodie provides UPF 50 level protection from the sun that extends from the back of your hands to the top of your head thanks to the thumbholes and slightly oversized hood, which easily flips up over your favorite fishing hat when that punishing sun won't quit. The newest version of this Patagonia staple is made with Capilene Cool Daily fabric, which was engineered specifically to perform in hot climates, giving you advanced breathability and moisture-wicking performance for your long days out in the sun.

  • Ultralight hoodie for total sun protection on hot days of fishing
  • Capilene Cool Daily fabric wicks moisture and breathes well
  • UPF 50 sun protection lets you wait in the sun for your dream catch
  • Roomy hood was designed to fit over a baseball cap for total shade
  • Thumbhole loops offer coverage for the backs of your hands
  • Polygiene anti-odor technology fights the funk after long days

OBSESSED

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Love this shirt for boating, flyfishing, working, sitting on my couch... etc. I've bought every color and so have my brother in laws. Highly recommend.

Shirt

Great shirt. Love this clothing brand.

    Great Layer. A little toasty.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

This is a super lightweight hoody layer. I use it most to protect myself from the sun on sunny beach days, desert hike days, or camping trips. It is an easy and comfortable piece of gear to quickly toss on so you don't have to deal with sunscreen or any other sun maintenance. However, I am accustomed to tshirts for most of my activities and the lack of breeze over your skin really causes it to feel like a sauna sometimes. I would recommend it for low to medium activity in warm weather. Also think it would make a decent layer for spring ski touring when you need to cool off but don't want to bake in the sun.

    Perfect casual summer AND winter

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XL

    Just ordered 2 more.
Perfect for winter days inside, when you don’t want to wear a sweater. Hood material, when buttoned is VERY comfortable and WARM against your neck.
My FAV out of multiple brands.

    Perfect! Excellent Quality!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I love this base layer so much I bought one in every color! The fit is perfect, and the material is so comfortable you almost forget you even have a shirt on! I’ve worn this at 14,000+ feet on super bright days, and the UV protection seems to work wonderfully! Definitely recommended!

    Perfect! Excellent Quality!

    Awesome

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

It's exactly what you expect. I have a 41" chest, and usually fall between a medium and a large. I got a large here, and it fits just a pinch loose: exactly as I expected and hoped. It's super soft, super comfy, and does everything it promises. I love it.
I will say that most polyester smells after just a day, maybe two tops. I wore this for 8 days in a row while on the water (about 4-6 hours a day) during a recent river trip, and much to my surprise, it was never smelly. Sometimes, I would catch a whiff of a different and interesting smell, but it never got the terribly BO smell I usually accompany with Polyester.
I would recommend this shirt to anyone. It's awesome!!!

    As advertised

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium

IMO they have made improvements to both the fit and weight on this shirt in the 5 years since I last bought one. This is a perfect summer shirt to stay cool and avoid the sun.

Thanks for your review, Stewart! We love hearing your feedback on the apparel you love!

    Love them colors

I have a couple of Patagonia sun type hoodies .I like the fabric feel with this one the best. I am not a big logo fan and I don`t really like the giant fish /mountain Patagonia advert. on the back of the shirt.

      Great piece for the summer

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: L

Great fit, super comfy. Got the L, I’m 5’9 and athletic build. Great for the sun and evenings. Doesn’t hold odors either. Love the hood too I am super happy with it. My wife not so much- she got sick of all the ladies checking this guy out at the beach.

LOVE this Hooded Shirt! (Add NAVY blue!)

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: medium

For weightless, cool, comfy protection from the sun, this is best 'sun shirt' I've ever owned. Kayaking on Maine rivers on hot summer days has been a pleasure this season. A medium fits perfectly for me (6'3", 155lbs. ) Please add NAVY or DEEP BLUE as a color choice. The colors are in the "Easter Egg Pastel" range and feel a bit loud for the back country. :-) The "feather gray" is pretty earthy but the "mako blue" kind of "candy" bright. I returned a "coral red" which read as more orange than red. The hood is also comfy and great to have at the ready when it's scorching hot.

      Sun Protection

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: large

I love these things. I have three now and wear them all summer in all kinds of weather. I will have to try it as a base in winter. I wish the hood had a different closure mechanism but I still love the versatile and SUN PROTECTION!

      Great Base Layer!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Medium

Have two of these, will certainly buy more, perfect shirts for summer mountaineering and alpine climbing. Keeps the sun off, dries super fast, and keeps the stink down when worn/sweat in for multiple days. Sure slightly warmer than going short/no sleeves but worth it not to burn. Very lightweight but holds up to at least moderate abuse on granite and while bushwacking. Hood almost fits over a BD vector helmet (you can jam it into the headlamp clips to really hold it), runs a bit baggy but probably not worth the size down.

      Great Base Layer!

      Great All Around Summer Shirt

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

I purchased this shirt for my husband to wear during the summer months as a contractor. He was looking for something that would be lightweight, protect from the sun yet still give a pulled-together appearance when meeting with homeowners. This shirt has become his hands-down favorite! The roomy fit and lightweight, quick-drying fabric make it exceptional on the job. I appreciate the anti-odor technology when he comes home from work. The downside is the hood tends to get in his way when doing roofing or tasks that require him to be bent over for long periods of time. He is also not a huge fan of the thumb hole sleeves. Overall though, he would recommend this shirt for anyone who is in the sun long periods of time. It is loose fit but he would not recommend going down a size.

      Practical use and great look!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Large

I got 2 of these shirts for through hikes in the mountains this summer. After multiple uses and washes, they are still great at protecting from the sun, and dry incredibly quick. I live in Houston, which has about as much heat and humidity you could test these with. They also work great while floating the river, since they're so light weight. Even soaked, they won't weigh you down or cling annoyingly. Fit is a little roomy, but not enough to size down I don't think.

      Great sun shirt

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Size Bought: Extra Large

I liked this shirt so much I bought 2 of them in different colors. Work great as a sun shirt as well as a thin layer for protection against bugs. Drys quick as well!

GREAT shirt for summer sun and heat!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Medium - fits perfectly

I bought two of these and love them. The UPF 50 protection is a plus and I the hood is nice to have when needed. Unlike a lot of other summer layers, this feels really light on the skin and doesn't trap heat. Now if Patagonia would make one in NAVY BLUE or DEEP BLUE I'd grab another one. (The "Spice Coral" is kind of an orange color and I'm not a big fan of it. The "Make Blue" is also kind of bright. I like more low-key colors.)

      great sun protection; dries quickly

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

Bought this for a recent trip to Kauai. Ziplining, hiking, ATV'ing, beach trips and just being under the Hawaiian sun. This shirt is as advertised and more. Really liked how cool and breezy it felt in the heat. The hood is great and the thumb holes are clutch. I wouldnt hesitate to buy another color.

Great for hiding from the burn!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

I bought this to switch from a button up sun shirt w collar to something with a hood. I love that I could unbutton the old shirt- but got stuck sitting a a belay for way too long last summer wishing desperately I could hide my whole face from the sun. This would have worked perfectly. I've worn it many times this summer already- including desert conditions. It's been great. For humidity I'd prefer my button up- perhaps someone will come out with a button up with a hood???

      Great for swampy Gulf Coast

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large

I am in the environmental field. I work out in the sun quite a bit and out on the water. The price for the protection (hood, with button up neck, thumb holes) are great. Pair it with some light weight pants, buff, and sunglasses and you're good to go.

I ordered large. I am usually in between M-L depending on the brand. The Large is a big big on me...but its comfortable out in the field. The material doesn't stick to your skin.

Beware....some come with the Patagonia fish logo on the back and some don't,,,what up with that Backcountry?

      Great sun shirt

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size

I purchased this for my fiance as he is always burning his neck fishing. The hood is awesome and it does a much better job at protecting your neck than a crewneck (even with the hood down). It is nice and cool and works great. The only thing that is a bit annoying is the button. The placement on the button is too high to turn it into a turtle neck and when it is unbuttoned it just looks a little funky.

      Medium or small for him?
