Strider Pro 5in Short

The perfect choice for hot summer long runs, Patagonia's Strider Pro 5in Short offers convenient storage and airy comfort whether you're on the trail or road. It's got four stretchy pockets around the waistline to hold all of those small essential items that make your run as efficient and enjoyable as possible. You can keep energy gels, packable weather shells, and smaller sunscreen bottles close by as you run, while the zippered back pocket keeps more important things like keys and cards tucked safely away. The Strider Pro is made with a lightweight recycled polyester stretch ripstop with a two-inch side split to give as much cooling airflow as you need in hot weather, and a knit synthetic liner wicks moisture, stretches, and breathes well to offer maximum comfort. Plus, the liner is treated with Polygiene anti-odor technology to keep things smelling fresh even after your longest and most grueling runs.

  • Lightweight running short with lots of pocket storage
  • Stretch pockets offer space for energy gels and packable layers
  • Two-inch side slits and lightweight fabric keep you cool
  • Inner liner offers support, breathability, and wicking performance
  • Anti-odor treatment fights the funk after your longest runs
  • Zippered pocket keeps keys and IDs safe on the road or trail

I loved these shorts... no more.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I have an old pari of Strider Pro 5in shorts that I have put through the wringer... they are the greatest shorts I have ever put on for running... the old design had a boxer-brief style liner that was magic, the external fabric stretched on all the right ways and they were not excessively baggy.

I recently purchased and returned the new Strider Pro 5 in shorts... they now have a normal groin chaffing liner, and an overly baggy non-stretchy outer material...

this product has gone from amazing to an expensive version of a running short one would pick up at a big box store... I'd gladly pay more for the original product... Patagonia how you have let me down.

Short Shorts!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

These took some getting used to, but have become my go-to running shorts for hot weather; and if I want to be fast. The liner was what took some getting used to, but the is supremely soft and supportive. The material breathes amazingly, with the pockets barely noticeable but able to hold a large number of items. (phone keys and room for more) These are great short running shorts.

Not what they used to be

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Size Bought: Small

I loved these shorts and finally decided to buy another pair, but the design has changed and they aren't what they used to be. I wear a small and the new design is longer and much baggier. If you have an old pair (2017ish), don't expect these to be the same

About the best shorts for hiking

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: x-large

I've always like running or "gym" or "workout" shorts for hiking (as opposed to "hiking" shorts. Looser fit, lighter (faster drying) material, shorter inseam. All of which means more comfort and better function.

I generally prefer hiking shorts on the baggy side in the leg circumferance, and these are suitably roomy for me, but not billowy. I'm 6' .5", about 185 lbs., with a few of those being "extra" ones around the waist. Most 36-inch waist pants with a bit of elastic in the waist fit me fine. I got these with a 5-inch inseam in an extra-large, and the fit is spot on for me. The leg circumference and the shorter inseam means the seam doesn't drag and bind on my thighs when doing steep uphills. And the 5-inch length doesn't look silly short when just walking around.

I rated this "true to size," but i've found Patagonia sizing to sometimes be kind of wonky for me; on a given item, some dimensions are fine, others aren't. With these shorts, i'm kind of between sizes, but since i like a looser fit, i sized "up."

I'm agnostic about the pockets, as i don't really use them when i use the shorts in hiking mode. I was initially concerned the little zipper on the rear pocket might get pressed into my butt by the pack or somehow get caught up on clothing under the waist belt, but it doesn't seem to be a problem.

The material is light (and comfortable), so it dries very quickly after washing or getting wet from sweat. The waist band takes a little longer, but still not bad. Haven't butt-slided down enough rocks to comment on durability/resistance to abuse, but so far, so good. Stink-retention seems minimal.

The boys gotta swing free, so i always cut the liners out of shorts that come with a liner, so i can't say anything about the inner.

If there's a better short for hiking, i haven't found it yet. Patagonia baggies are pretty good, but they're a little bulkier in the pack, and the fabric is a bit heavier and stiffer. If there's a downside to the Strider Pro, it's the 69-dollar, regular price, but if one is patient, they do show up on sale now and then.

Great shorts

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Size Bought: Small

It's a great short... if you are a fan of brief liners! I prefer boxer liners so it was a bit of a disappointment. Other than that, they are great. If you want a boxer liner go with the Nine Trails from Patagonia they are great!

My Favorite!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I have several pair of the Strider 5 inch running shorts. My absolute favorite. I would like to see Patagonia drop the latest updated version of this short go back to the former design. The pockets on the current version are of looser material and do not hold the content as securely as the former version. Also the pull string that replaced the tab on the zippered read pocket was a bad decision; comes loose and almost lost it twice in the washing machine. Nothing was wrong of the old design; aka "if its not broken, don't fix it." The draw string and the elastic waist band is not of the same quality as the prior model. Yup, sometimes the update is not an improvement. Still these are my favorite running shorts.

Great running shorts!!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

From the very first run in these, I knew they’d be my go-to shorts. Very lightweight, waist is minimal (no funny rolling), liner fits just right, and they really move well with me. I just ran my first 20K in them, and couldn’t have been happier with how they held up - no chafing, sweat seemed to wick off better than most shorts, which is a big deal for me as I’m a bigger guy who sweats!! Large fits me well, and I have large quads. Adequate pockets. I’m sure I’ll buy another pair or two soon!

Perfect!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: medium

The update to the strider pro's were so well done. It uses great quality material and is comfortable on each run I've taken.

I've put this through miles upon miles, and they've risen to every test I've given it. They remain nimble at all times and wick water as fast as you'd like! Just overall a great product and as well as it running true to size, there's no doubt I'll be buying more.

The Ultimate Active Short

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

Sure, I trail run in these, but why stop there? I've always been a fan of using active wear for just about any outdoor activity--I just think its more comfortable to hike, climb, etc in performance clothing than donning what is essentially stretchy chinos. These things are super breathable and give you a full range of motion. You may not meet the granola standard of outdoor clothing if you wear them, but that can be a plus in and of itself.

Here's some more technical info about the shorts. The mesh liner is comfortable and breezy. The side pockets fit an iPhone 10 comfortable and are designed so that it won't bounce around or get in the way while you run. I have a 3 inch waist and the mediums fit well.

IT IS THE PERFECT!

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

Patagonia Strider Pro 5inch is the World's best running shorts.
If there is a product to compare with this, I think that it is only the 7 inch model of the same product.
Anyway, Strider Pro 5' is a product that impresses me every time I wear it.
It is strongly recommended. Buy it all! You will not regret it.
WHERE IS THE 'PERFECT'? RIGHT HERE!
* But inner wear is too small.

Women’s version is better

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Small

I have 2018’s versions of W’s strider pro running shorts (purple with 2.5 inch inseam and two front pockets). I didn’t realize until they arrived that these ones don’t have the two front pockets, just the four side pockets and the back zip pockets. Why would Patagonia get rid of two entire pockets?! The fit is also really weird. I wear an XS in the W’s shorts, but need almost a medium in these shorts! I ended up exchanging M’s XS for size S, and even these give me love handles. I’ll tolerate them because I’m tired of exchanging these shorts. I use these for fastpacking, trail running, and mountain running/peak bagging. It’s nice to have so many pockets. The front-most side pockets fit an iPhone 7s with a bulky case perfectly. The iPhone does NOT fit in the zippered pocket. That’s usually where I put my keys. I usually put a wind jacket and/or pants in another pocket, snacks and trash in other pockets, and a small tube of sunblock mixed in there somwhere. The pockets can actually hold quite a bit of stuff, and they stretch nicely without too much bounce. Because the shorts are so tight on me at the hips, they don’t fall down when I have them loaded, but the shorts do have a small amount of tie if needed (I’m surprised it doesn’t have more, given these shorts are meant to hold a lot of stuff). I also often use a Simple Hydration bottle tucked into the back of the shorts, and that works just fine with these because they are tight enough. One thing I do like about these over my women’s version is the material; it’s seems a bit more lightweight and breathable. The XS M’s shorts were about 3 oz, whereas the W’s XS 2.5” inseam were heavier (didn’t write the weight down). This might mean less durability in the long run, but the breathability will be nice. I got these in the hopes that they would have a bit more leg protection from the sun, but they only seem slightly longer than my W’s 2.5” inseam. The tattoo on my mid thigh still shows. But they at least cover my butt cheeks! I think if I were to do it again, I’d get the longer version of these in a medium. In conclusion, size up!

Women’s version is better

Awesome shorts

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: Runs small

I purchased these shorts for my husband and he loved them! They are short and super light and breathable. He did find they run a tad small in the waist, but they are still great! He is 5’9 and 175 and got a Medium in them.

Great shorts

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

These are my favorite workout shorts. Good length and great styling. I typically lift with these as opposed to running and the couldn't be more comfortable. Also, they look great and are lightweight. I have not experienced any chaffing even on the rare occasion that I do run in them. Thinking about picking up another color.

My favorite running shorts

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

I own 4 pairs of these shorts. They’re my absolute favorite running shorts! They’re very comfortable, don’t slip (read as: no chafing on the waistband), have tons of storage, and are well made. They’re great for long runs as I can store my keys and plenty of Gu in them. I hope they just keep producing these and coming out with new colors.

Best shorts

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I now own 3 pairs of these shorts and will continue to buy more. They have a huge amount of storage for gels, phone, even a wind shell if you need it and stay out of the way when you don't. Absolutely my go to short for everything from track workouts to ultra days in the mountains.

Great Shorts

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

The pockets on the side are great and keep whatever you put in them secure and in place. The back zipper pocket is very useful for a phone or keys. The shorts are very airy and keep you cool.

Really great

I really love these but the only downside for me is the 5in inseam is a bit much for me! Aside from that they have a bunch of great niche things with the shorts themselves!

Best running shorts I've ever owned.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

These are hands down the best running shorts I’ve ever worn. The pockets are very well thought out and can carry a good amount of weight. I often run with a largish smartphone in one of the side stretch pockets and the shorts have never ridden down on the trail or road. Also very comfortable on long runs and hikes never had any chafing or irritation. I cannot recommend these enough. I got my first pair on clearance and liked them enough to pay full price for my second pair.

    Long Hike Comfort

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: M

These work great for long multiday hikes. Comfort and temp control

    A brief liner?

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I was put off when I tried these on because of the brief liner as opposed to every other running short with boxer brief style liners. The pockets are fantastic, they’re nice and breezy, comfortable, etc. but then I notice the liner again. I’m baffled at such a great company making a perfect pair of shorts and ruining them with such a thing. I can’t believe more people don’t complain? I didn’t even know this style of liner/underwear even existed in 2018. All in all they are still my favorite shorts and worth buying. Just be prepared to readjust the liner constantly, and make sure that no one is looking when you do.
