Planing Roll Top 35L Backpack

Sometimes the gang likes to hit the town after a long day of surfing, and while you could just hope that your swimsuit dries by the time you sit down at a nice restaurant, it'll be easier to keep all of your wet and dry gear separate in the Patagonia Planing Roll Top 35L Backpack. Designed for long days of surfing, fishing, and swimming, this backpack features dedicated storage for wet and dry clothing, making it no hassle to change into something dry without soaking the rest of your pack. In addition to the spacious roll-top main compartment, which keeps out rain and spray and offers expanded storage when you need it, you've got a self-draining mesh pocket in the front that houses all of your wet trunks, tops, and towels without allowing water to pool. A padded back panel, breathable shoulder straps, and a removable waist belt all contribute to a comfortable carry, ensuring that you've got the support you need to hike to even the most secluded spots.

  • Spacious daypack with dedicated storage for wet and dry gear
  • Main compartment with roll top closure offers expandable storage
  • Mesh front pocket keeps your wet gear stashed and drains easily
  • Breathable straps and padded back panel provide a comfortable carry
  • Internal mesh pocket keeps smaller items secure and organized

Beware the endless drips

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Perhaps ideal for some use cases, but not for walking with wet items! I got it for a few surf spots I go to that require ~half mile walks when I prefer to change at the beach. Walking back with a wet wetsuit in the "wet" compartment will result in nonstop drips coming out the strangely placed holes at the bottom/middle of the compartment. It essentially rains on your butt, back of your legs and feet while walking and your lower half will be completely wet. I'm not sure what this was designed for? Maybe for storing damp items on a drive or or organizing snorkel gear while on a boat? Anyway, posted a similar review on the Patagonia site and they never posted it - and it looks like they even removed another similar review there - so thought I'd try here to save other surfers from wasting their time.

Would be awesome, if it was a 25L

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I was super psyched on this pack for summer adventures and the photos made it seem ideal for river trips. The main pocket is HUGE. It's a typical roll top dry bag, which I considered keeping for longer canyon trips involving wet gear, but I ended up deciding to return it because the bulkiness of the rolled top made the pack too much for day carry. It fits wider than my shoulders when on my back and loaded.
I would recommend this bag for very specific use, but I would prefer it with a smaller main compartment, probably in a 25L .

How to Measure:
-Have a friend locate the bony bump at the base of your neck, where the slope of your shoulder meets your neck. This is your 7th cervical vertebra (C7). Tilt your head forward to locate it more easily. This is the top of your torso length.
-Place your hands on top of your hips bones, with fingers point forward, thumbs in back. This it eh "shelf" on which your pack will rest. The middle of an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs is the bottom of your torso length.
-Using the tape measure, your friend should measure the distance between the C7 and the imaginary line between your thumbs. Be sure you stand up straight when being measured. You know should have your torso length.
Measure around your waist just above your hips.
