Travel lightly.

A good tote bag carries whatever your day requires, keeps your hands free, and moves with your body. The Patagonia Lightweight Travel Tote is made from a supple, featherweight ripstop fabric and stuffs away into its own pocket for easy storage. It features a large zippered main compartment for easy access and an external zippered organizer (with key clip) that swallows the entire bag when it's not in use. There's also a handy internal zip pocket for valuables and side mesh pockets for bottles or snacks. Backpack-convertible shoulder straps tuck away when not in use, and the lightweight foam back doubles as a seat cushion.

Varied uses!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I LOVE this tote. I use it as my school bag, and I love using it on long bike rides because it's so light weight feeling on my back no matter what I have in it.
Currently i'm using it as a tote and it definitely feels heavier this way, but I still like it.
I like that the straps can be tucked away so it looks only like a tote when I'm using it for that purpose.

Multiple uses

    I have this backpack and I use it for all my climbing gear or as a personal item when traveling! My sister asked for this for Christmas and she uses it as a baby bag! This bag packs down small but also fits a ton of things

    And bag #4 is the winner!

      I received the lightweight travel tote today, on schedule as promised by Backcountry. I had purchased 3 other bags (not Patagonia) through Amazon, and returned them all. This item meets all the requirements I had, and I trust that it will live up to the usual durability of a Patagonia product. So, if you need the following as I did, this is the one for you too:
      1. Packable and lightweight;
      2. Convertible from handles to backpack straps;
      3. Hideable backpack straps;
      4. Backpack straps separate from tote handles so they were not too far apart, i.e. so I can swing this over one shoulder using the backpack straps together if need be.
      5. Outside zippered pocket;
      6. Inside zippered pocket;
      7. Side mesh pocket (this has 2!) for a water bottle and then some as there are 2.
      8. An open space without a laptop sleeve to block up the space (I want to use this on flights as my underseat item so it needs to hold my smaller sling bag and leave room for 3 in 1 bag, book, etc.
      9. High quality water resistant fabric.
      10. Comfortable to wear on the back.
      That is it. This is the one!

      Great Bag

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

      I purchased this bag for my sister, who says "I got this backpack to use as a diaper bag. It is comfortable, lightweight, and the colors are great. The bottle holders on the outside are great to hold my toddler's water bottle for easy access. The pouch that the backpack folds up in is great to hold car keys and a phone so they don't get lost when the bag isn't folded up."

      Handy for travel

        I bought this to take on a trip to Costa Rica. It was really convenient for keeping my essentials handy on the flights. The tote handles are great for avoiding smacking people in the face with the big while walking the aisles of the plane during boarding. It did take me a while to get the hang of the buckles. Once I got the trick of it down, this bag became my favorite day bag. I take on trips, shopping in town, out walking the dog, and anytime I want some hands free, lightweight storage.

        Like it

          Bought it for my daughter to take on trips when they needed a bag to carry around extra things. Lightweight and compact.

          Great All Around Bag

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

          I purchased this to bring on a trip to have a small pack or shopping bag. It worked perfectly, can be rolled up small to fit in luggage. Used it as a both a backpack and as a bag for the market. Now I have a second one that stays in my vehicle for shopping or when we need an extra bag for an excursion.

          99% the Perfect Bag

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

          Like other reviewers say, this is almost the perfect bag with both tote handles and backpack straps (smooth sailing after the 15 seconds it took me to to figure out how to click together the backpack straps). The only thing missing is a cross-body strap to truly make this the best bag on the planet. I travel a lot and bought this bag to use as a carry along with a 19" roller bag (works for budget airlines too since it's the perfect size). When I take my 40L backpack to Europe, I'll just stash this in a pocket and pull it out when I tour around. I wish I'd had this bag in Portugal last month since I needed just a little more room than my cross-body purse had. I'll use this awesome tote for day trips, road trips, unexpected hiking, city shopping, etc. Can't wait to try it out in Ireland with the rain! I'll update my review if it does well.

          Amazing Tote/Backpack!

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

          Love LoVe LOVE!!! I purchased this to take on a cruise and it was absolutely perfect for the airport, pool and beach. The material stayed clean, the backpack straps are comfortable, adequate amount of zippers for smaller objects, and the amount of "stuff" I was able to fit in the main compartment was great! I highly recommend this bag and will likely be buying another as a gift!

          Spacious Pack

            I use this as my climbing bag - I originally bought this in navy but lost it. I decided to buy the same one again but in black!

            Love and Hate

            • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

            I use this as a daily diaper bag and has enough compartments for my things and my toddler's necessities. Bought this for our summer travels, took it on several flights, and the backpack to tote option is very convenient for the airport hustle. Chest strap makes it more comfortable, helps shoulders relax. Material cleans up easily. Love it except backpack straps do not adjust easily, it's not functional like a backpack used for long distance hiking. Fasteners for the backpack straps slip and do not stay once you adjust it. Disappointing because Patagonia makes quality stuff. Thinking I have a defective bag.

            Cute but not functional

              I was wanting to use this as a daypack during my travels but I soon realized that it wasn’t as comfortable or functional. It’s a lightweight material but it has no structure so when wearing it, it will bunch up in the back if you have something heavy in it. The waist straps are useless and just get in the way. It isn’t breathable against your back so I often end up sweating a lot. Also only one interior pocket and the outer zipper, so there isn’t much room for organization. I wouldn’t recommend this for traveling.

              Great multi-purpose bag

              • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

              Got this for a new mom, who says: "We use this bag as a diaper bag. My husband and I wanted a light weight, gender neutral, sporty spice, functional, and inconspicuous diaper bag- this bag fits all those! We like the multiple pockets for stashing snacks, water bottles, etc. as well. It would also make a great daypack for traveling or great carryon bag for flights. "

              That’s exactly what I was looking at this bag for. So thanks for the review. SOLD.

              Awesome Little Bag

              • Familiarity: I've used it several times

              This is a super useful bag for traveling! It's very lightweight and can pack down super small, but when it is unpacked, it really has a lot of room. The straps are minimal, but still work great.

              Unanswered Question

              Will a hydroflask bottle fit in the side pocket?

              What is the dimension of the bag when inside the stuff sack? Looks about 5'' x 5'' x 2''???

              Hey there Chris!

              It doesn't look like they offer that sizing anywhere! I would say it is about 5-6 x 6.5 x 1.5

              If you would like to try this out you can reach out to me on the number on this reply or email or if you'd like to talk about anything else : )

              I just bought / received this bag.

              It is about 8'' x 8'' x 3'' inside the bag. It can be compressed a bit smaller, but not much.

              I love you, backpack!

              • Familiarity: I've used it several times

              I did an embarrassing amount of research to find the perfect backpack for a trip to Disney World. I wanted something light, roomy, and (who am I kidding) I wanted it to look cool. This pack fit all of the criteria. Yeah, it's not perfect - like, why is that darn front zipper vertical? And I wish the side pocket was deeper for larger water bottles. It's still the best day pack I've ever had and I was sad to store it in my closet when we got home. See you on our next adventure, friend.

              Versatile backpack

                I use this backpack for pretty much everything - including hiking, work and traveling. I️t folds up extremely small so you can pack I️t as an extra bag to use later while traveling. There’s also a laptop pocket in the back and are a second set of straps incase you want to carry I️t as a shoulder bag rather than a backpack which i like.

                Perfect for bike commuting

                • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

                Love the colors, love the size, I can fit my laptop in it perfectly but love that it's not a dedicated laptop bag. I love that it zippers closed at the top rather then toggle or straps and I love that it has handles to carry it like a tote.

                Right out of Harry Potter!

                • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

                This bag is magical like many Patagonia bags. It packs super small, but serves a great function. I took it as a day bag to Italy for 2 weeks and it was a tank. It ate giant pieces of salami and San Pelegrino, held layers and all of my personal effects (in a blackhole cube of course!) and still had room for more. The padding works great and the straps are very comfortable. I liked being able to stow the traps and waist belt away and use this as a tote, and it doesn't even drag on the ground!

                Best part of this is it's ability to hide messes and clean up well: We took a long train ride with a bag full of groceries and I discovered a day later that all of the berries we had bought got squished and mixed with salami and salad greens and fermented, yet there wasn't a drop on the outside. A quick rinse in the sink and some inverted air time and it didn't even smell. This would be a great diaper bag OR farmers market bag, but not both!
