Why We Like the Down Sweater Jacket

Mustering up the willpower to get out of our sleeping bag in the early hours can be daunting, but not if we're wearing the Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket. Incredibly warm and light weight.

    Perfect winter coat

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: L

This is the lightest and warmest coat! Perfect for everyday use. Love it!

    Great item better people

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Thank you to all the Gearheads for all the help and support, I would like to especially
mention Johanna, and Alexis Carson, took a long time to help with my purchases and one exchange. Keep it up! Thank you. Shawn E

My trusted down sweater for a decade

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

Warm, light weight, packable, classic styling and clsssic fit (it fits a bit boxy around my midsection, so not a slim fit), typical Patagonia quality. It has a couple of holes that I've taped up in the past couple of years, but that's after nearly 7-8 years of using this almost every cold day of the year here in Philly.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

Warm coat. I use it every day in the home, I get about a year out of it, material doesn’t hold up for daily use.

    Just perfect!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL

Received as a gift, I like the semi-trim fit and packability. Can see using it for cold dog walks, cool evening at the campsite or the crag. The fit sort of limits what you can wear underneath it; basically only a base layer. Personally, I intend to get a Columbia Terminal Tackle Hoody or Patagonia Capilene Cool Hoody, perhaps one size down, to wear underneath and have some neck warmth. We live in North Florida, so my preferences might not reflect those of folks in colder climates.

    Low Quality Material, Short Sleeves

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Large

Can't think of anything that's good about this down jacket other than the color selection and weight. It's super basic, down is okay not that warm, the zippers are cheap and janky and the outer material is thin and fragile. It's also a very bad choice if there is ANY moisture in the air. Not that I would use this for rain but it seemed to suck moisture out of the air and get "damp" looking spots, darker than the rest of the jacket. There was also fraying and extra string at the seems. Not a great selection of pockets. I would compare this to a $50 down jacket you can get at Costco with even less ability to withstand moisture.

Another issue for me was the fit. It's short and boxy, I'm tall and slender, it was huge and wasteful around my midsection, hardly reached my belt line and was tight in the shoulders. Not to mention my wrists shot a good 3-4 inches past the end of the sleeves and were fully exposed (size Large) and I could not find a pair of gloves that closed this gap.

    I expected more

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

I can't be bothered to return this as it took me a long time to make my mind up to buy it. Size fits perfectly (small - I'm 180cm and slim), and looks good. However, I expected more from the insulation. 800-fill apparently refers to the quality of the fill, and makes no promises about how much of that high-quality fill is stuffed in there. As it turns out, the jacket doesn't feel very 'puffy' at all, and the amount of feathers is very disappointing. If you hold some areas with two fingers it feels like there's no feathers or practically no feathers in there.

    Gift for a family friend.

Let’s just saw he was very happy with his new jacket!

I always use this type of jacket so nice n warm

        Does the job

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: Large

This is my go to jacket for everyday wear. Keeps you warm but it's not bulky like most down jackets.

        Not sized for everyone

        • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
        • Fit: Runs large
        • Size Bought: XL

I ordered 2 of these coats for my son and myself. I'm about 6 feet and 215 with an athletic build. I ordered an XL, and it fit well in the shoulders, arms, and chest, but was much too big in the torso. I tried my sons' large size and it was too small in those areas, but the torso did fit better. I'm not going to reduce the rating because it feels like a great product, and fits my son quite well. If you're someone that regularly goes to the gym, the cut on this one may be way too generous in the mid section. If you consider yourself a typical build or even carrying a few pounds in the midsection, this would be a great jacket.

        Worth it

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: Large

I am very happy with my purchase. I always wanted a down jacket and bought my first one. The backcountry live chat was very friendly and made my decision even easier to buy it.

The best layer I own, seriously.

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: Medium

After many years of picking up *budget* down packable items and other layers that are supposed to be warm, I finally pulled the trigger on this jacket. All of the 5-star reviews I read were certainly for good reason.

        - EXTREMELY versatile, can wear with just about any outfit in just about any condition.
        - Exceptionally warm, especially for something that packs down so small (tested in 40 degree temps with a base layer so far)
        - Length of the sleeves are perfect - many others make sleeves that are a bit too long, but this Patagonia down coat is PERFECTION

        - I have now developed an addiction to quality items made by Patagonia, and will be replacing all my discount gear :)

All in all, an extremely versatile jacket that is surprisingly warm and looks sharp both on the mountain, or wearing around the office. HIGHLY recommend!

        Love it

Bought a black one for my grandson a while back, and he loved it so much that I got him a second one. He said the fit was true to size, light and warm.

          Love it already

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times
          • Fit: True to size

The reputation of this jacket is great, and mine was no exception, extremely light, extremely warm, and very well fitting. I’d highly recommend this to many people for many different occasions.

          Great Jacket

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
          • Fit: Runs large
          • Size Bought: Large

Great Jacket, although I had to return sizes (initially bought XL changed to L) because it fit a little large the customer service team was very friendly and easy to work with. I know some posts say to buy true to size but in my opinion this jacket should fit on the snugger side, due to the down material if it isn't fitted it looks too puffy.

For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
Measure from the center of your back to your wrist with arms held out.
