PatagoniaCapilene Midweight Bottoms - Men's

Total comfort from the chairlift to the ice wall.

The Patagonia Men's Capilene Midweight Bottoms are your new go-to pair of long johns for any and everything winter. The Polartec Power Grid fabric has a smooth face for easy layering, and its brushed grid pattern delivers superior warmth and breathability while wicking moisture away from your body throughout all of your cold-weather endeavors. The gusseted crotch allows unimpeded mobility for those deep knee dips on your teles, and the flatlock seams reduce chafing throughout the aggressive back and forth movements found in the mogul fields. Great baselayer!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

These are great! The mid weight was enough to keep me warm in the Santa Cruz mountains for a trip I did in the area in early April. Even with rain, I was still good to go. Super comfortable and very warm. Probably wouldn't wear them in the summer while hiking, personally I'd probably get to hot in them

Perfect except for the waistband

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

These are a perfect cut and a perfect fit for me and are warmer than I would have guessed based on the weight. However, the flimsy waistband immediately folds over itself and stays that way, making it feel a bit sharp. I have zero "midriff bulge" that would cause this. It's a small annoyance, but shouldn't happen with a manufacturer like Patagonia.

Great fit, great price

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These have a fantastic athletic fit, they're pretty warm with some basketball shorts and a goretex layer over them! I have to take a lap or two but I'm warm and comfortable on at 15 degree day on the mountain.

Toasty Base

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I picked up the mid weight piece as a base layer for my snowboarding adventures over winter. I will primarily just wear these with a pair of shorts over them. These bad boys are really comfortable and i can really feel the warmth difference when wearing these.

Perfect Weight for Cold Days

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: medium

I stocked up on these to wear this winter. Skiing, hiking, or just making sure I'm warm during my commute to and from work, these are comfortable under everything. The Capilene is soft and keeps me dry. Not bulky, they don't bunch up, even under denim they lay flat all day. One of my favorite products from Patagonia.

Coast Guard ready

I bought these for my son. He's using them as an authorized under layer with his USCG uniform. As a Boatswains mate, he will see lots of weather and there bottoms look ready for the challenge! Well made, light and comfortable.

Nice and warm!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I used these under some patagonia pants to cut the wind and it worked very well.

Great Baselayer!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Thin but WARMTH. Not form fitting which I like. Chilly Mornings and Cold Night with this are SUPERB. Highly Recommended Product from PATAGONIA.

Good hiking Baselayer

  • Fit: True to size

I used this one in a hike trip for 3 days with temp in low 30s, not too cold, but was confortable enough to just to put some light weightwater proof pants on top of it and hike the entire day. Also, the antimicrobial treatment works!

Good Baselayer

It get 4 stars instead of 5 because the synthetic material picks up odor quicker than a natural fiber blend layer (ie merino) but the fit is good and they keep you warm for colder days on the slopes.

Quality Base Layer

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I'm 5'11" and 175lbs - I wear a 32 x 32 jean. I bought a medium and they fit great - not too tight, not too loose. Probably could even fit into a small honestly.

Pros:
- These are decently warm and are my go to layer for under my (shell) Arc'teryx Theta SV bibs for both resort and backcountry skiing. They almost run a touch hot for touring, but with the side zips on the bibs they're able to dump heat well enough.
- Wick moisture away! Can't ask for more on that.
- Have a good fit. No weird hugging in places it shouldn't.
- Long term durability seems fine. Have only used them for a season, no QC issues to speak of.

Cons:
- Being synthetic, it will pick up funky odors faster than wool. These aren't too bad, but noticeable after several days of tour (ie hut trips).

Overall, can't go wrong with these. Great pair of bottoms for a base layer and will last a few seasons for you!

Climbing in the cold?

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've always worn under armour base layers since they've been in the game so long. When i got my first pair of Capilene bottoms i wore them and couldn't believe how soft and stetchy and comfortable they were. I haven't worn a pair of under armour bottoms since. These things breath great, feel like you're wearing nothing but also keep you warm when you need that extra layer. I highly recommend everyone try these out.

Warm and comfortable. Great next to skin layer. I wear these with non insulated ski pants at the resort and touring. Good weight for most resort and touring days. Great for lounging around on the couch as well.

Unanswered Question

Why are outdoor clothing companies still making base layers with a seam right in the middle of the seat?!! If I wanted something stuck between my hot cross buns I'd wear a thong!

NICE piece

Warm enough for most resort days when it is not super cold (I wear shell pants, not insulated) and cool enough for cooler touring days. (might be a bit warm for warmer touring days.)

Good Base Layer

I purchased these for a good mid base layer for Alpine riding out west. This is a very warm good base layer, and has good wicking properties. I have other base layers from diff. brands and the material is very comfortable and non chafing. I have a size large(I have mediums in burton mid layer pants for comparison.

Super Comfy
