I asked the Backcountry expert to help me find a winter beanie that would work for a cold and snowy Packers game sitting outside for 4 hours. She was very patient and helpful finding options for me. Still, I am going to give this hat only three stars for the following reasons. I’d return it if I did not have to pay postage.
1. The top of my head had a very cold spot ten minutes into a walk in 20 degrees with very little wind. I was wearing light boots, wool socks, jeans, a wool shirt and a gore Tex jacket shell. And only the top of my head was cold. I would not recommend this beanie for very cold weather unless you also have a hood you can put over it as I had to today.
2. The L/XL hat is very snug, on the border of being too tight despite the description saying it ran true to size. My other beanies fit well as larger, but I cant imagine being this beanie fitting if you ordinarily wear an XL.
The benefit of the snug fit is that it keeps all the wind out and fits well under the hoodies on my running jackets. I have had a number of cold runs with this hat covered with my hood. This soft hat is much more comfortable than a wool beanie and looks good in the blue and black combination.
I don’t have any experience in the rain or snow so I cant comment on how water proof this hat is.
