Ultralight SuperStrand LT Hooded Jacket delivers packable warmth for trail days and travel

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

“This is one of my favorite lightweight layers when I want warmth without committing to down. It stays warm even when conditions get damp, packs down small, and clips easily to my pack when the sun comes out. I use it for hikes, crag days, and travel because it’s always useful.”

We zip into the SuperStrand LT Hooded Jacket when we want warmth without slowing down. Designed by Outdoor Research for movement and versatility, this jacket feels right at home on cool trail mornings, breezy approaches, and shaded crags where lightweight insulation makes all the difference. It’s the kind of layer we bring along because it disappears in the pack—until we need it.

The synthetic insulation delivers a soft, lofty feel while continuing to insulate even when conditions turn damp. A lightweight ripstop shell fends off wind and light moisture, and the fixed hood adds an extra barrier when clouds roll in. When temperatures rise, the jacket stuffs into its own pocket and clips easily to a pack, ready to come back out when the day cools again.

This jacket is the perfect combo of cute comfortable and warm. It’s perfect for a hike or a chilly evening! I love how it stuffs into the pocket and is super light and packable but really warm. Would definitely recommend!

Fantastic warmth to weight jacket!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Needed a lightweight, packable jacket for a big hike-this was it! Kept my warm without overheating. I have the Cool Matcha color which is BRIGHT to say the least, but also a good color for spotting out on the trail in case of mishap. I'm 5'9", ~150lbs, and the medium is perfect.

Great jacket

Roomy, so one can wear a sweater underneath. Very lightweight in feel but keeps me warm. Didn't make any annoying noise when I walk. Glad I purchased it.

Avoid the yellow color

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I bought this jacket for its features and color. When it arrived the jacket looked patchy or stained, almost. Looking closer, I saw the material was so thin I could see the gaps in the filling of the jackets. It might have been less noticeable with other color options, but the poor quality of fill made me question the jacket in general. I have other OR products that I love, and have bought from Backcountry before. I returned this jacket for a refund, which was a pretty easy process. This could have been a one-off experience for me, but it was a little disappointing coming from some brands I really support.

Overall nice, but fragile fabric

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I bought this coat for a trip to Iceland and the Faroe Islands (currently 9 days into a 3 week trip). On the 4th day of wearing this coat, generally covered with a rain jacket, I noticed a tear on the right elbow. So, I have to agree with another reviewer that the fabric is not durable. The hole is covered with duct tape and I will contact Backcountry on my return home in 2 weeks. On the plus side, the coat is much warmer and wind resistant than expected. Also, it's very light weight and compressed into a relatively small package. I'm just really sorry that it ripped on the 4th day I wore it. I would not purchase this jacket again as a result.

Light and warm

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I love how light it is and yet warm without all the bulk. I use it as mid layer and it’s absolutely perfect. It’s not water repellent but it’s fast to dry. To wear it as standalone jacket is mainly good in spring and early fall. The yellow color is perfect. Sizing is great. I’m happy overall.

Like it, but ripped easily

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought the yellow to be more visible while walking my dog. It’s very comfortable and warm for how light it is, but it ripped easily while playing after a walk and is clearly not as durable as other jackets I own. I am disappointed in the short life it had in perfect condition, but may try to sew or patch it up. I can usually wear a small in most jackets, but went with a medium to have room for extra layers and I was happy with the fit. Sleeves are a bit long, but fold up ok.
