You'll be glad you brought it.

Even though it's warm at the trailhead, your hike to go check out the fiery fall foliage might get a little chilly at some point, so make sure you have the Outdoor Research Women's Sonata Down Vest stashed in your pack before you set off. It's filled with lofty goose down insulation to keep your core warm without weighing you down, and it stuffs into its own pocket for easy storage when you don't need it. And if the chilly weather brings a bit of rain or snow, the Pertex Quantum fabric shrugs off light precipitation so you don't get soaked as you hurry back to town for some much-needed hot cocoa.

  • Featherweight, yet super-warm vest
  • Wind- and water-resistant fabric
  • Down insulation is light and highly compressible
  • Left pocket doubles as stuff sack
  • Brushed tricot collar for cozy feel
  • Internal stormflap keeps cold gusts out
  • Zippered pockets secure small items

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

I love Vests- as dorky as I am told I look- they are super practical in the shoulder seasons as an everyday piece.

I first fell in love with vests on a cross country road trip because they were small, packable and perfect for when you wanted a jacket, but didn't all at the same time.

I've been wearing this vest for a while and it's great! My one complaint is that it's a little tight in the hips, but since I am only using this a casual piece, I don't worry about it too much. Outside of the tightness in the hips every other part fits great. So if you are on the edge, size up! It's a slightly shorter vest, which is nice to have variety and it's cozy and warm and it is not unusual for you to find me wearing this at my desk year-round!

Great Packable Vest

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I've never been a vest person - but that may be changing! This vest has been indispensable during my last few trips. It packs to be tiny so I can always tuck it away, but really adds that extra warmth under my shell or as an outermost layer.

It does run a little short in length, and is a slim fit, so order up if you're unsure. It also leaks a few feathers, not too bad.

Overall - sweet lightweight vest!

Great overall vest to have for casual or hiking/climbing.
-Super warm
- high-end performance
-nice to style with when going out in town
-easy to pack (lightweight and compressible) (packs in left pocket)
-color is pretty (I ordered the black/flame)
-zippered hand pockets and chest pocket!
-trim fit (size up)
-shorter than my other vest

Thanks for the review, Aleshia! This is my go-to. LOVE this vest!

Very nice looking vest but too small

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

I wish I could've kept this vest, but the size medium was far too small for me. Every other vest I've owned from many different and varied companies has been a size medium, but I couldn't even zip this one past my rib cage. Granted I've got a fairly burly chest =) but I was very surprised. Beautiful color and quality otherwise. I didn't bother to order a large because it was probably going to be too big in the waist going from the fit of this one.

Hey Maggie,
Thanks so much for the feedback on this vest! Let me know if I can help you find another option with the perfect fit; sorry this one didn't work out!

Your Expert,

Hi Margaretta, I am so sorry it didn't work for you. I am between a medium and a large and took the large, and it fits well. Maybe the takeaway here is to size up if you are between sizes? I will let OR know as well. Thanks for writing!
