Outdoor ResearchPentane Tight - Men's

Reinventing the wheel.

Some would argue that trails are the only way to run, which is why Outdoor Research optimized the Men's Pentane Tight for those who prefer training in the mountain for alpine missions. Its stretchy fabric wicks moisture, dries quickly, and breathes to keep you comfy whether you're sprinting over crispy, autumn leaves or spring's green return. Outdoor Research made the seams flat to reduce chafing on really long runs.

Puzzling pockets

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

The fabric is fairly light, the cut is s straight leg. The leg is on the long side for a medium, but the leg is also narrow. That seems to be a common theme with athletic wear these days. These are snug around my thighs (22.5 inch) and my calves. But not snug at the knees or ankles. They are almost-tights. This makes the part above my thighs look a little silly, because the style there resembles pyjamas (seam right up the middle). So with them clinging to my thighs, I felt ridiculous. Then there are these irrational pockets. Irrational, you say? Too strong a word? You tell me: two of the pockets are open-top, and triangular. They are 3 inches wide, tapering down to zero. Yes, a sharp pointed terminus. They are 11 inches deep. If I put a key down there I'd have to take my pants off to get it back. And you can't put your hand in. So they are ideal for carrying... a ruler? No, the corners would dig in where it tapered down to the ruler's width. Chopsticks? No, too deep. Maybe a drumstick (the rock-n-roll kind, not the poultry kind). Yes, a drumstick would be perfect. Now that we've solved that mystery, we can turn our powers to the third pocket which is zippered and sits right on your sacrum. It is big enough for 2 credit cards. That's about it. Or, ditch the credit cards, you could get one energy gel in there. No Clif bar, so sir, not THAT roomy. But one gel. Hopefully that's all you need.
I am dying to interview the guy who designed them, because either he or I have a lot to learn about gear...

Not sure

These weren't quite pants, and weren't quite tights. The material was soft, but these weren't what I was looking for.

Non-tight Tights

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I don't know why I was expecting pants, it say tights right in the title. However, they do not fit like tights. Not like pants either. Like tights that are a half size too big. The material weight is a little more than lycra but not fleecy. Just a little warm for a trail run at 40 degree temperature. Overall, I think I will end up liking them.
