Ouray Aerogel Ice Glove

Outdoor Research’s Ouray Ice Glove gives you the protection you need from the biting cold while still being agile enough to drill an ice screw and clip a carabiner. This women-specific glove was made to combat the screaming barfies when you're climbing vertical pillars of ice. Outfitted with Gore-Tex Xtrafit, this glove shears wind and water right off the shell while you’re throwing out a figure four as you work a crux section of overhung mixed ice climbing. Meanwhile, Aerogel insulation situated over the palm retains heat and reduces the chance of cold spots appearing in the glove so your hands can stay nice and toasty warm. Built with a pre-curved construction, the gloves are naturally ready to wrap around an ice tool to maximize energy efficiency; this way you’re not fighting against the glove to hold onto your tools as you’re already fending off pumped arms when you near the top.

  • A women’s specific glove for climbing steep vertical ice
  • Gore-tex Xtrafit Insert is wind and waterproof for ice climbing
  • Aerogel palm insulation minimizes cold spots
  • Pre-curved construction designed for holding ice tools

Size L is too small for long fingers

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: L

I really wanted to keep these for alpine & ice climbing, but they were just too small for comfort. The palm is wide enough but the finger length is too short. The problem is, I bought the size L, so there is no bigger option offered in the women's version. The men's version is too bulky on my palms.

It's SO hard for me to find fitted, warm climbing gloves for slender hands. I'll keep using my Mountain Equipment Tour gloves, but hopefully OR can make these in a style that works for me one day!

SO WARM (but yes, they run small)

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

My hands typically run fairly cold, and I have never found gloves that keep my fingers truly warm when it gets much below freezing--until now! I took these out ice climbing in 5°F conditions with mild winds, and aside from the inevitable cold from holding your hands overhead for long periods of time (hey, no gloves can defeat the basic principles of the human circulatory system...), my fingers were warm the whole time. They were dextrous enough for me to do pretty much anything except untie a welded knot, and stayed admirably dry during some pretty wet conditions. They may even get me to like ice climbing in spite of myself.

But yes--as the other review says, these run small! I am usually an XS, and the S fit me quite snugly--any smaller and it would have been too small.

Thank you Etha! We are addressing the sizing with the factory for F19.

True Story: When OR first showed us this Aerogel technology, the amazing insulation in the glove, they took a blow torch to a cookie sheet that had a Hershey Kiss on it. What happened? The Kiss turned into a puddle. THEN.... they did the same thing, but this time, they put the Kiss on a sheet of Aerogel, took the blow torch to it, and what happened? NOTHING! The Kiss was very much intact.

So this insulation is the real thing. It does not let heat or cold through, but it is so, so thin, hence your dexterity.

Thank you for the great review!

Seems well constructed, runs SMALL

I measured my hand and followed the sizing chart for these gloves. I was a solid medium per their chart but the mediums are too small. So, l'm exchanging these for a large (I normally wear a medium)

Lori - thank you for the feedback. I have heard this, so all others, please size up! We are checking our specs for updates in Fall 2019. Thank you,

Leta

How to Measure:
Measure the hand cirumference around your hand at the widest point excluding the thumb. Just below the base of your fingers. Also measure your hand length from the base of your palm to the end of your middle finger. Use the larger of the two measurements to select your glove size.
