Hi, I have an Outdoor Research Ascendant hoody in medium that fits snugly but comfortably. What size should I get the Interstellar if I want to be able to fit it over the Ascendant or possibly bulkier down jacket?

Because the Interstellar is trim I would go up to a Large to insure that you don't feel cramped when layering. Thank you for the question!

My go-to jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is based upon my personal experience and opinion. After wearing the Outdoor Research Interstellar Oasis Jacket for hiking, mountain biking, trail running and cruising around town, I certainly know why it has the word STELLAR in it! This is my all sport jacket. While running and mountain biking, I really appreciate the mobility allowed by the stretchy feeling material. I have full range of motion and do not feel restricted at all. It fits over my helmet and has a draw cord to make a perfect fit along with the moldable visor; this helps keep the snow and rain out of my face. It has become my go-to jacket for outdoor endeavors. I have worn it in snow storms, during whipping winds, and through heavy rain that won’t let up. It has all the features to protect me from the elements; it’s super comfortable, warm, and dry. I actually look forward to putting the jacket on and heading out in weather that is less than desirable. I only adjust my underlayer depending on the temperature. On warmer days I wear a light top underneath the jacket, and on colder days, I layer according to the temp. I’m thankful the material is breathable when working up a sweat pushing the pace on a trail run. This one jacket replaced several jackets in my closet. I highly recommend the Interstellar Jacket, if you are looking for ONE jacket to rule them all. This jacket motivates me out the door when most people stay home.
Sizing: I wish I ordered an XS but, I’m always in-between a small or extra small depending on the fit. I feel like the arms and torso run long (but may just be in my benefit for providing more protection and warmth). I went with the small because I wanted room for layering underneath but the XS most likely would have been a better fit for me. I am 5’ 3” and 114 pounds Bust 32” Waist 26” Hips 34”
Usage: Trail Running, Hiking, Mountain Biking, Around Town
Quality: Excellent. I put the Interstellar jacket to the test on my mountain bike. This jacket is lightweight but will not rip or snag on trees or rocks. I love the ease of all the zippers and the storm flap to ensure no water can leak in.
Accuracy: Very accurate. Waterproof, breathable, lightweight, Air Permeable, Motion-Mirroring Stretch, Halo Hood. The label says trim fit and I would say it’s a standard fit.
Extras: Pockets! Gotta have lots of pockets to stash the phone, keys, snacks and whatever else you may need. The Interstellar has storage space for it all. I really like the mesh behind each pocket making the jacket even lighter and more breathable. The draw cord is great for making on the fly adjustments as well as the Velcro cuffs that I like to have for tightening over my gloves. One of the coolest features is the jacket itself packs down into its own stuff sack, in the left-hand pocket, making it easy to stow away.

My go-to jacket

Hey Kim! So glad you are enjoying your Interstellar! I have found the performance remarkable, and although I am the rep, I certainly do not say that about every single piece. Thank you for the great detail.

Happy Trails,

Shells are so tricky; they have to be waterproof, but how well do they breathe? Will I overheat? Will this jacket trap my moisture vapor??
The answer is an unequivocal "NO!"
The electrospun technology lends itself not only to breathability, but to enough air permeability to allow for a perfect exchange of air, to help prevent the "sweat box" that can often happen in a shell. It's like a web, or like cotton candy, so the breathability is off the charts. You will love the Interstellar!!
