Deviator Hooded Insulated Jacket

The Hybrid Mapped construction of the Outdoor Research Deviator Hooded Insulated Jacket makes it ideal for highly-aerobic alpine ascents. The front and sides are made of nylon ripstop and contain Polartec Alpha synthetic insulation to keep your core warm. The arms, hood, and back use Polartec Power Grid stretch fabric to let you move freely and to dissipate heat where you sweat the most. A stretch mesh lining keeps everything from feeling clammy inside, while the Polygiene Active Odor Control treatment will have you at your freshest, all the time. Thumbholes help keep everything secure when you're reaching high above your head, and the flat-seam construction ensures chafe-free comfort all day long.

  • A technical midlayer for skiing, hiking, or alpine climbing
  • Body-mapped Polartec provides smart insulation for on-the-go ladies
  • Stretch mesh lining enhances the jacket's moisture-wicking power
  • Polygiene Active Odor Control treatment keeps fabric fresh
  • Thumbholes keep the sleeves in place during active pursuits
  • Flat-seam construction discourages chafing and hot spots
  • Athletic hood can fit easily beneath a snow or climbing helmet
  • Trim fit layers well beneath a shell and over a base shirt

Layers!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've had the Deviator for some time now and it is so brilliant for layering. It keeps your core warm without overheating your whole body. Also because of its streamlined design, it's really easy to layer with a shell or another mid-layer for added warmth or water protection. The grid fleece and core insulation are very soft against your skin so you won't be irritated if you are moving around a lot while wearing it. I mainly wear this while running in the fall or winter time because it is the perfect layering piece that moves with you on the go! Also- there are thumbholes!! (need I say more?)

Thank you Laurel - I love the Deviator as well. So, so versatile!

MI AMORRR

  • Size Bought: Medium

Was NOT expecting to love this mid-layer as much as I do!! I am amazed at how well it distributes the warmth without trapping it in the armpits. I LOVED how long this jacket fit my lanky body (I'm 5'11" with a pretty athletic build), and loved how light and non-restrictive it is for running my 4.6 mile leg on a relay race.

I can only imagine how much more perfect it will be for skiing in the winter!

Hey Jess - I know what you mean. It's a piece of clothing... how could it possibly be JUUUUSSSTTT the right piece in so many situations? I have no idea, but this is my experience as well. Possible my most versatile piece of gear I own! Enjoy!

Go-getter.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

I picked this jacket up for my partner, who uses it primarily for climbing and high-output, cold-weather activities. She adores it and thinks the combination of breathability, lightweight insulation around the core, and true next-to-skin comfort make it the perfect piece for layering over a tank during cool/cold climbing sessions when a puffy would be too stuffy or fleece would get sweaty and clammy.

She's 5'9" and 135, and size M is a comfortable, slim fit on her. However, it's cut just a bit short for her (especially in the arms), and sizing up seems to get wider, but not much longer. If the cut of the jacket were even an inch or two longer in the body and arms, she'd use it for skiing and touring more, but it's relegated to non-winter wear instead.

This is one of the most versatile pieces in the OR line up. An excellent choice! Enjoy!

I think I need TWO! Flattering + Sporty

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

As many others have said, this is an awesome top ! I found myself reaching for it for a variety of situations - under my ski jacket (thumb holes are comfortable, and are perfect for wearing under your gloves/mittens), or on its own for some winter trail running (temperatures around 20F), or even just wearing around the house, or out in the city since it's so light and flattering. The ONLY thing I would change is simply adding zippers to the side pockets to hold my phone/keys in, etc (there IS a zipped chest pocket though!). I personally also believe it is true to size and comfortable - I read that others have had it run small, but it wasn' the case for me & no tightness in the shoulders (and I have fairly large climber shoulders). I wear a M/L and went with the Medium and it was perfect! Great, great piece!

100% agree, Paulina! Thank you for the great review!

Polartec YAASS!!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: L

This piece is perfect as the top layer in the spring and fall. I used this trail running in the mid 30 degrees. The Polartec technology insulation is so warm and cozy! It has thumb holes which lengthen the arms just a bit. The chest pocket holds a Iphone 6+ no problem. I do wish the hip pockets were zipped as well but unfortunately they are not. The pockets do lay flat which is flattering so that is nice. The hood is tight and fits around my BD half dome helmet no problem. I haven't used this skiing yet but can't wait to use it as a layering piece. The chest is a tad bit small so if you have a bigger chest I would size up.

My only critique on this jacket would be that its a bit snug around the shoulders. I can only manage to wear it comfortably over a tank top or light T-shirt. I love it regardless!

Thanks for the feedback Shannon!

Awesome technical piece

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: M

I'm really happy with this purchase. I bought it to use for skate skiing in the winter months. I've used it several times this fall - it's an excellent lightweight piece for outdoor activity in the colder temps. It's simple and highly functional, I especially like the chest pocket to store my phone when I'm listening to music. I purchased a medium and it's a tad snug but it will work well for working out.

Thank you for the review, Lindsay!

Goodnight puffy

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

My girlfriend described this as a ‘Goodnight puffy’ while backpacking—it has been taken on and enjoyed every trip. Super versatile and comfy—a win win!

Great analogy! Thank you for sharing!

Love This Layer

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

This layering piece is so comfortable. I wear it backcountry skiing and cold weather running, but I also wear it casually. I love the thumbholes and the Polartec sleeves are super soft. The hood has an elastic band around it so it stays on when you are doing physical activity. At first I wasn't sure I would like the Ultraviolet color, but now I love it. It stands out. I typically wear a size small and the small fits perfect.

Thank you for the review, Jess!

    Zip it and Forget it.

    • Size Bought: medium

I use this for ice climbing, hiking, ski touring and will probably also use them for chilly runs this coming spring.

The body mapping is on point and wicks the sweat well, to keep me dry. It's thin, which I love because I need a lot of layers for belaying on the ice. So, I need to keep the bulk down.

i really like the fleece arms. They keep the limbs warm, without worry about scraping the fabric again rock and tearing it up. Also, they stay put, with the stretch in the fleece, while climbing.

The fit is normal. I'm a medium and the medium is spot on.

    Zip it and Forget it.

    The best thing ever

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    • Size Bought: Medium

This jacket has become my most favorite first layer! Perfect over a tank or a lightweight baselayer. It breathes incredibly well, is durable enough to wear climbing, and is surprisingly warm. And the thumb loops are on point! I don't think it's the most hip looking layer, the fit just seems a little off, but with how well it performs I could care less.

Seriously... should be EVERYONE'S favorite layer!

    Enjoy!

Must Have for any Backcountry Skier

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Small

This may be my favorite OR piece I own or have used! I bought it after my buddy -- the most avid backcountry skier I know -- recommended it. The stretch fabric and insulation combo keeps your temperature at ideal levels, because everyone knows it sucks to disrupt your momentum with constant shedding/layering clothes to avoid sweating/freezing. While I bought this specifically for touring, I have found myself wearing the Deviator on other adventures too -- it's perfect for hiking, trail running, or walking the dog on chilly autumn mornings. This jacket is cut slim, and I normally wear a XS or S in Outdoor Research, and went with the small. I could have been comfortable in a medium as well, but I prefer my insulators to be more fitted.

    Thank you Alisha!!

    my favorite layer EVER

This piece is my absolute favorite layer. It's like a mix of a Patagonia R1 (arms) and a synthetic jacket (around the core). It's comfortable, warm, stretchy, and looks great too! It's an AMAZING layer for climbing.

    Wmns Deviator Hoodie

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: small

Bought as a gift and unfortunately had to return it. My wife was thrilled to get the Deviator but this piece must run a little small. My wife usually wears size small or even XSmall depending on the garment or brand, but we think she needs a medium. It felt tight and a just a little short. Which is odd because she has other pieces from OR in size small and they fit perfectly!

Hi Shaun, Yes, this does fit small - OR is aware and is addressing the fit, but it will always be an athletic fit or trim fit. Still, I agree with you that it is smaller than it needs to be. I am between a medium and a large and wear a large well.

    Thank you!

Thanks Leta! Sounds consistent across the board. She was able to try on the Medium Deviator and it fits perfectly!

Update: I got my wife the medium and she used it snowboarding this past week and loved it. She had a wool tshirt baselayer underneath, then the deviator, then an insulating vest, with her shell over the top and it performed great! Awesome layering piece!! I/we think/expect it will excel in Spring and Fall and cool summer mornings/nights as a more stand alone garment as well.

    Perfect for Layering

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Got this lightweight layer just in time for a cool, damp run on Sunday. I love it! I stayed comfortable and never got that "clammy" feel that sometimes happens when there is moisture in the air.
I actually bought it for ski season to wear under my shell when it's cold and under my vest when it's warm. I think it's going to be perfect for both!

This is such a great layer, I am psyched you love it~ Thank you for the great review!

    Amazing layer!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    • Size Bought: L

I love this jacket - it's lightweight, breathable and vey functional! I have used it for fall running and hiking in a cold western mountain town. Each time I have been glad to have the hood, thumb holes, and windblocking panels. The fit is very slim. I wear a M in almost every other jacket but had to size up to a L for this one. The L is still fairly form fitting/flattering/shapely and has room for a thin layer or two under and enough room for full range of motion. I am athletic, 5'7", 140 lbs with broad shoulders.

Hi Robin, I couldnt agree more - fantastic jacket. I am between a medium and a large and needed a large. It is a trim fit, but once you are in the right size, it's awesome!

Surprised by all the acclaim for this

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

I love OR. Got the Acetylene jacket a couple of years ago (buy it if you can find it!) and it's the best all-season, all-purpose jacket ever. But got this one b/c it has a hood and rave reviews (from outside of Backcountry). Only the grey was available in my size. True to size - 5' 8", 135 lbs, athletic build, medium was perfect (wear small for some things but not jackets; surprised other reviewer ordered small and was surprised it was too small). Functional, pretty much (warm for winter running). But (pettiest first) grey is super dumpy-looking (for a chick). Fit is not as flattering as the Acelytene (fit for a chick) - baggy. Wicks moisture to outside of jacket but doesn't release it - soaked after a 5-6M winter run with just baselayer underneath (temps in the 20s + wind). And augh - inside of sleeves stick to whatever you're trying to put on underneath. HOWEVER, if used as a spring/summer/fall jacket with a tee or tank under, as it looks like most folks wear this for (have read many reviews elsewhere), then it'd be great, I bet. Glad I did not pay full price for it, though, and will likely be giving it to a friend.

Hey Amy, thank you for writing. I am surprised that it didnt work for you as well as it has for me and many others. The sizing for me is a bit small, so I am not surprised that you sized up. I needed to as well.

      Thanks for writing,

      How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
      Bust:
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
      Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
      Hip:
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
      Inseam:
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
