Why We Like The Coldfront Down Hooded Jacket

On winter days when the winds howl and the skies threaten us with falling flurries, we slip into the Coldfront Jacket before heading into work. The tightly woven fibers stop gusts and flakes from finding entry, while pockets of down trap our heat inside, and strategically placed synthetic fill eliminates cold spots.

Way too big!

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I wanted to love and keep this item. Unfortunately, the size was way too big. I am 5'3" and 145 lbs. I am usually a M/L to a L, so I assumed based on all of the reviews, that a M would be the right fit. The M fits like a L or even XL. I was swimming in it. I would still live to exchange for a smaller size, however the sale is over, so I would be paying double.

Weird fit, fiddly drawstrings, bad cuffs

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I wanted to love this. I do love the 'watercolor nimbus' color, which I went for only because it was cheapest (not normally a pink person) but is actually really pleasant. The jacket seems warm. But the fit is really perplexing. I think it would fit somebody petite much better. I'm about 5'7" & a size 4, with fairly (but not especially) broad shoulders and a small bust, and I bought a size small, my usual. The sleeves are quite wide and there is more than enough room around the middle — I had to cinch down the waist to avoid drafts — but the jacket's waist hit me quite high on my own, and its back and shoulders are cut weirdly narrow. Reaching around with my arms led to a lot of pulling across the back that made me worry about stressing the fabric too much, and the jacket felt constricting to my range of motion. As a result, it just looked super unflattering and dumpy, between the puffy sleeves, the shrunken-looking shoulders (the sleeve seams hit too high on them) and the too-high waist cinch (think peplum). I think if I had sized up to a medium, it would have been too big around everywhere else. This just seems cut for somebody more petite. Aside from the fit, the jacket seemed very warm, and the hood is tremendous — it's very thick and generously sized with good coverage and a nice long neck (sometimes jacket hoods skimp on that, like you have no neck!), and the cinch on it is easy to use (and cinches just below where my ponytail is). I can't say the same for the waist cinch drawstrings. They would be much better if you could access them from inside the pockets, as you can on many jackets, rather than from inside the jacket itself. If you're getting a draft from the bottom and need to tighten up the waist to seal it off, you first have to unzip the jacket to access those drawstrings, and once you do they're small and fiddly — I can't imagine managing them wearing mittens. I'm also not into the thumbhole cuffs. They're a thin, slick, stretchy fabric — not cozy. I don't really see the point, other than keeping snow out of your sleeves. But decent gloves' cuffs would do a fine job of that.

Nice jacket

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought this jacket because the sale price on this particular color (the blue came) was hard to pass up. I will be using it for winter dog walks. I ordered large instead of XL (I am often between these sizes depending on the brand). I have some other Outdoor Research items in size large also. It fits very well. I wouldn't say it runs incredibly large as other reviews said. However I didn't need to size up, so they must not be totally wrong. It's warm. 700 down fill is pretty good. It has a nice hood with a toggle to snug it down. It has cuffs at the wrist to keep the warmth inside. It covers your backside somewhat. Good zipper. The camo blue color is odd yet not terrible. It has some pink and gray mixed into it.

Size down!!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I’m 5’2, 115lb and wear a 32ddd bra and a small in most down jackets. Compared to the Patagonia down sweater the small in this is HUGE on me. The arms are ridiculously bunched up and massive while the body allows me to wear many oversized layers. The xs is sold out in black so I will keep this for the few rare extreme cold days when I need to layer more than normal but listen to the reviews and size down at least 1 maybe 2sizes. I can say that sizing aside, I love the style, material, length and hood on this. It’s almost parka length on me but much more flattering lengthwise than the average parka on my short torso and petite frame. This would be my everyday dream jacket for outdoor and city adventures if the sizing was more accurate and if it had a chest pocket for my wallet.

Warm, flattering, what’s not to love?!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I am so in love with this coat. Just arrived today but it’s perfect. So incredibly warm I was toasty just trying it on. The color is awesome, Loden is something between army green and brown. It has a sinch option inside it to allow you to shape it and the hood is the same. Also has thumb holes to keep arms warm. I just returned a coat I bought elsewhere that was not nearly as warm and an awful color. I can’t believe the difference. So happy!!!

Perfect for daily winter wear

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I love this jacket. Bought a medium, though I'm sometimes a large in OR but didn't want the sleeves and body to be too long. I could probably have gone with a large but the medium is fine. It is warm and I love the thumb holes. Allows me to keep my hands slightly warm without wearing gloves inside of the hockey rink. Would 100% buy again!

Warm, lightweight, couldn’t ask for more

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I love this! I read many reviews prior to buying a down coat and am not disappointed. I would agree with the crowd that this brand in general runs ok the larger side. In terms of winter clothes and layering I picked 1 size up from my usual fitted size in other jackets and am happy I did. I tried this jacket out with a bulky fleece zip up and had no issues in terms of the arms which is usually the problem. Also I LOVE the wrist gaiters with holes. Other reviews said they were tight and uncomfortable and I did not feel this at all. The sleeves are long so there was no tightness in the hand and I love the option to put your thumb in, and if you don’t want to you can not see the inner lining. And I have not even discussed warmth. It’s great!! Perfect for 30-50 degree weather. Hood is awesome too, fits on my head and you have the option to tighten it. Overall absolutely LOVE this jacket along with the price. Definitely worth it and it is good quality. I bought the green color and it’s beautiful.

Almost loved it

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I ordered this in the blue color and initially loved the exterior fabric, both for it’s apparent durability and comfort, and also the more matte appearance. It seems this jacket would be a great technical down jacket while just a little more casual and durable than the ultralight styles. I liked that it had a longer hem for more coverage too. Ultimately my least favorite part, which was a deal breaker for me personally, was the wrist cuffs with thumb holes. Personally I hate thumbholes! And I also dislike a very tight wrist cuff, as it creates difficulty, inconvenience, and discomfort when trying to throw the jacket on quickly, or over a thicker sweater/sleeve. I haven’t decided yet on a new down jacket, so I’ll check back next year to see if there’s a version with no tight wrist cuffs, and no thumbholes.
