Don’t sacrifice dexterity for warmth.

If you find yourself crossing a snowy ridgeline with a pair of skis across your back, keep your fingers warm with Outdoor Research’s Bitterblaze Glove. It might be easy to forget about your fingers with the amazing view, the thought of the great chute you’re about to drop into, and all the fun you’re going to have. But they still need to stay warm so you can keep your partner on belay, handle that ice axe, and still maneuver around through your pack as you prepare to make your descent.

Using Aerogel gel insulation originally used by NASA, this glove's palm virtually eliminates the cold spots that normal gloves get after seasons of use. The rest of the glove is filled with Primaloft’s top-of-the-line Gold insulation for dependable warmth at a surprisingly low weight. Gore-Tex Xtrafit combined with a nylon and spandex blend create a waterproof and windproof exterior without compromising flexibility. This way you can be sure your fingers will be warm enough to get the job done, whatever it may be.

  • Comfortable gloves while belaying your partner in snow
  • Gore-Tex Xtrafit insert is waterproof, breathable, and dexterous
  • Primaloft Gold insulation is surprisingly warm and compressible
  • Aerogel palm insulation eliminates cold spots
  • Carabiner loop on finger to carry on harness

Not Quite Ready for Primetime

These gloves are warm and dexterous without bulk - for the most part. The aerogel inserts are thin and unobtrusive. I think the Bitterblaze could have had an excellent execution to market except that the fingertips are sloppy - so much so that it’s a dealbreaker and these are going back (I have proportional hands and wear a size medium - I know fit varies from person to person). I’d pass on these and wait for the next iteration. I should note that I bought these for ice climbing. If you want them for some other cold weather activity where fingertip dexterity is not so important they may work for you.

    solid

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

solid ice glove. dexterous enough to lead. good down to high teens with a thin liner for me. below that I go to the projects which i think were a bit more insulated.

    Great on Ice

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Used these for a couple of trips to climb in the seracs on the lower Coleman at Mt. Baker, and they kept my hands warm and dry even when top-roping around running water. They're thin and preserve enough finger agility that I can clip draws, tie one-handed cloves, and manage gear comfortably.

    How to Measure:
Measure the hand cirumference around your hand at the widest point excluding the thumb. Just below the base of your fingers. Also measure your hand length from the base of your palm to the end of your middle finger. Use the larger of the two measurements to select your glove size.
