The Best

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

I love this layer. It's the best layer. The best. For one, if you're talking about the best layering for winter, you are pretty much exclusively talking about Merino. It feels nice on the skin, resists odors and "the funk" in a way you cannot believe until you try it, and it wicks moisture and regulates temps.

Besides that, this layer is the peeerfect blend of fit and function. I am 6'5 and 210lbs, and went with the XL. The fit is trim, perfect for layering over, but not so tight that I look like a sausage when just wearing this piece around town / office / whatever. The length is slightlyyy long, again, just perfect so that you can tuck it in while layering, but it still looks good for the around town / office wear.

Lastly the material is a nice, relatively thin blend which combined with the 1/4 zip makes it FANtastic for ventilation. I am the kind of guy who has a really hard time being comfortable and not overheating when doing aerobic activities in the cold. This thing base layer keeps my skin covered, but doesn't trap too much heat. Once I feel myself getting too hot, I crank down the zipper and all the heat from my chest / torso zaps right out.

I think this piece (or maybe the other version with the hood) is the perfect layer for snowshoeing, winter bike commuting, and any other aerobic activity for those that tend to run warm, and want their base layer to be light and breathable.

100/10 would buy again, and probably will if and when I wear it to pieces.

Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Hip:
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Inseam:
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
