Osprey PacksMutant 28L Backpack

Climb it all.

The Osprey Mutant 28 Backpack was designed and built for vertical endeavors of all disciplines, so climbing, mountaineering, ice climbing, and ski mountaineering objective will all be within your reach. The Mutant comes well equipped to deal with long and technical approaches, but can also be stripped down when you need to save weight when beating the weather means going light and fast. Being the smaller option in the Mutant line, the Mutant 28 has a large bucket-style zip opening with an internal slash pocket and a lightly padded hip belt with gear loops, making it the most minimal of Osprey's Mutant packs.

An aluminum stay and framesheet can both be removed when packing light, or can be left in when carrying loads up to forty pounds. The large main compartment swallows everything you need for single day objectives in the alpine and will carry either a skinny alpine cord or long sport climbing rope via the integrated rope compression strap and helmet carry net. The Mutant will also carry ice tools and skis when you're lured to the alpine to attempt some mid-winter ascents and descents. An integrated sleeve will carry a hydration bladder up to three liters in capacity, and all of the zippers are fitted with glove-friendly pulls for added convenience when you're trying to keep your fingers warm.

  • Removable aluminum stay and HDPE framesheet

  • Hydration system compatible
  • Padded hip belt with gear loops
  • Integrated rope compression strap

Backpack Backpack, Backpack Backpack

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm the backpack loaded up with a rope, cams, and quickdraws too. Anything that you might need I can fit inside for you. Backpack backpack. Backpack backpack. YEAAHHHHHH!
This backpack can hold all your necessary gear and won't weigh you down. Better than Dora's pack.

Ok but what does it hold?

Great Winter Day Pack

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Got this pack for winter hiking and snowshoeing in northern Vermont. I wanted a simple top loader with one big space to hold hiking gear, food, water and extra winter clothing. The pack has performed great on several all day hikes in dry and wet conditions. The pack fits me great and is easy to adjust. Snowshoes are easily attached to the sides or back of the pack with voile straps or similar. I'm very happy with the Mutant for winter day-hikes with and without snowshoes. Highly recommended!

Great Winter Day Pack

Osprey Delivers

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought this backpack for my sister's Christmas present because she needed a backpack to put all her climbing gear in, here is what she had to say: "I love this backpack! It holds everything I need it to. Shoes, ropes, chalk bag, extra jacket, food, bottle, whatever. When I first put all of my gear in it I was expecting it to weigh my back down, but it distributes the weight so well that I can't even tell how much is in there. The material is nice and it has compartments inside that make it easy to separate everything. I would highly recommend this backpack for outdoor use or if you just need a backpack to carry around town. Osprey makes quality gear. I've never been disappointed"

Karissa! Thank you for passing on your sister's great feedback!

Versatile Osprey Mutant

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've owned this pack for about 2 years and have taken it on a variety of adventures. It's strongest characteristics are it's ability to be stripped down to become a light, fast, mountaineering pack and it's ability to serve it's user well in a variety of uses. 28 liters is enough to load a climbing rack, rope, food, water and extra layers for a long day up, over and down whatever terrain is in front of you - yet when stripping out the frame sheet, and pinning back the more supportive hip belt this pack performs exceptionally when the terrain gets steep, wearing a harness and the necessity to carry food, water, and layers for that long steep climb, and the necessity to carry the load out at the end of the day. Great pack. Very versatile. Only the features you need - nothing you don't. I love this pack.

Thanks for the great review! Happy Trails!
