Lyngen Gore-Tex Jacket

Backcountry enthusiasts and hard-charging resort rippers know that no matter how cold it is on the mountain, you can get pretty hot pretty fast when you're working hard enough. Breathability and ventilation are key, and few jackets have either like the Norrona Lyngen Gore-Tex Jacket. Designed for backcountry touring, this jacket features two of Gore-Tex's most lightweight, breathable, and waterproof fabrics. Gore-Tex C-knit in the shoulders and collar offers more stretch for a greater range of motion, while Gore-Tex Active 2.0 in the body maximizes breathability to keep your body at an optimal temperature during active pursuits. But this jacket was designed with the highest intensity output in mind, so it goes the extra mile to keep you comfortable with innovative venting. It's got the option for a subtle mesh vent running all the way down the front zipper, as well as two huge underarm vents to give you effective airflow when you're really cooking up or down the mountain. A helmet-compatible hood, comfortable thumbhole wrist gaiters, and large chest pockets round things out to help you thrive on the snow.

  • Stay comfortable while you move in the backcountry with this jacket
  • Gore-Tex C-knit in the shoulders offer easier motion on long climbs
  • Gore-Tex Active 2.0 in the body delivers high breathability
  • Front zipper has mesh-lined venting option for up-front cooling
  • Underarm vents give you added ventilation after tiring powder runs
  • Helmet-compatible hood has you covered when snow rolls in
  • Thumbhole wrist-gaiters offer added coverage and keep the snow out
  • Inner and outer chest pockets keep important gear close by

Superb lightweight winter shell

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

I have to admit that i've only worn this once, however it was a great test case, the most recent storm to hit the Wasatch came in warm, wet and windy - skinning up USA bowl this morning, layering properly was imperative to manage the heat generated on the lower part of the skin track, before dealing with 50-60mph gusts on the ridgeline, and the cold that accompanies those gusts!

First off the jacket is light, like when i got the box it was hard to discern if there was actually something in the box; it's definitely minimalist but it's a shell, so you shouldn't expect anything except some well tailored Gore-Tex.

The jacket fits true to size, I typically wear two layers plus a light down vest, and there was sufficient space in the jacket to store my skins for one of the runs; the jacket has a couple of pockets, pit and side zips for ventilation, and also a nifty second zip up the torso for extra airflow - hard to describe and i haven't used it (yet) so can't report back on it!

Wind proofing and breathability were on-point - by the time we got to ridge we'd already passed through a number of temperature changes, but those gusts were pretty vigorous, it felt like the wind was just going around me, which either proves that this jacket is pretty solid in those conditions, or that my last jacket really needed replacing! Didn't have to worry about water proofing for this particular outing but i'm sure it'll hold up as expected.

One thing that i was interested in seeing if it would work out was the hood - no worries, it easily went over my helmet and having it zipped up all the way didn't tighten around the neck like my previous non-Norrona one. The hand gaiters were a nice touch too, as were the cut of the hand holes which meant that my gloves were fully covered.

So in summing up - i'm happy i picked this jacket up, i'd done a fair amount of research including the BD Sharp End shell, Dynafit Yotei, and the Norrona seems like a winner (again, based on the one time use, but will use extensively over the coming weeks).

I love this jacket. However it is a very specialize piece that is best served for those individuals looking for a lightweight jacket that is both extremely breathable and waterproof. I personally use this jacket for ice climbing and ski touring and find that I can stay one steady temperature going uphill without having to wait to put my shell on. If you are looking for a resort jacket this will not be the jacket you are looking for and instead you may want to check out Norrona's Lofoten Gore-Tex Pro jacket. But if you want a jacket that will keep you dry and won't make you overheat while you are pushing boundaries in the backcountry this is the shell. The shell also offers plenty of room for layering and is the perfect length in both the sleeve and waist for integrating with your favorite touring/ice climbing gloves and pants. The pockets are also nice and big for storing your belay gloves in between pitches. I also really like the double zipper system that allows you to dump heat while the jacket is still zipped.
