Mountain Hardwear Phantom Hooded Down Jacket - Women's
Mountain HardwearPhantom Hooded Down Jacket - Women's

Ultralight warmth and protection for the alpine.

The Women's Phantom Hooded Down Jacket readies you for cold alpine conditions. Its baffled shell works with the down's Q.Shield treatment to resist moisture and retain its warmth even if it gets wet. The down's 850-fill rating means this jacket brings the highest loft and the lowest weight available. Butter Jersey cuffs utilize soft elastics to seal out the cold, and the zippered handwarmer pockets are always accessible even with a harness or backpack on. Mountain Hardwear added two large internal mesh pockets for gloves.

If you're looking for a jacket with a "slim fit," this isn't it. BUT if you're looking to be the warmest babe out there whether you're camping in the snow, belaying your partner ice climbing, or just generally run cold - you've found it!

I've only borrowed this jacket from a friend but am thinking about upgrading my current big puffy jacket. She has had this for several years, and it has one patch on the arm where she had an unfortunate incident with a tree branch, but it's back to 100% with a little patch!

She had the size small which fit me well in the torso, but was a little tight for my broader climber's shoulders. I'm generally a small but size up for that often, and am 5'5" 130 lbs.

Great warm jacket

I gave this jacket as a gift to the girlfriend. It is super warm, compresses really small and hardly weighs anything. Great around town piece, or for winter camping, backpacking, belaying in the shade, etc etc.

Wonderful Warmth

This jacket is so great. This is by far the warmest down jacket I've ever owned. I bought it to camp in the desert in the spring as well as for winter camping. I wanted something thick but still compressible. This jacket doesn't aim to be a super minimalist jacket like the Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer. I was looking for a jacket that would keep me warm without having to pack a bunch of layers to wear underneath. This jacket does the job. I use it for walking around campus in Salt Lake City, UT. I'd say the comfort zone for this jacket it 10F with a maximum low around -5F. It has nice thumb catches that keep my hands warm while driving.

Wonderful Warmth

Great jacket but didn't work for me.

I really wanted to keep this jacket it was so soft and warm, like cuddling up in a sleeping bag. But I needed a ski jacket and this needs a shell over it for protection from the wind. With a shell it would have been too bulky. If I could have justified purchasing it just because I loved it I would definitely not have returned it.

I really wanted to like this jacket

I had ordered this jacket to be my "in between" coat, for temperatures between +20F and -20F, before the parka gets pulled out. I live in central Alaska, so there is very little to worry about in terms of wind or precipitation in the winter, just varying degrees of cold. I received this coat at the end of November. There are a lot of things I like about it. It fit GREAT. I have quite broad shoulders, and was delighted to be able to move/ski/play in the snow in this coat without any binding around the shoulders or chest. Loved the color, the hood worked well, sleeves were long enough, fabric seemed sturdy, all good things. But the insulation just did not cut it. My core was warm, I could tell extra effort had been made to insulate around the chest area, which was cozy. But even at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, the cold soaked right into the shoulders and arms, so much so that my shoulders started to get stiff during a ski. So, alas, I will be sending this lovely puffy back. If adaptations were made to the shoulders and arms so there was not a heat loss in those areas, I would keep it in a heartbeat. I could see this coat working for someone who lives in a warmer climate, but tends to be on the chilly side. The extra insulation in the body of the jacket would be super snuggly.

How is the Phantom Hooded Down Jacket at blocking wind?

This coat is meant to be paired with a windproof shell, like the Mountain Hardwear Torsun Jacket. The Phantom Down will be okay in light or moderate wind, but it's really just an insulating layer, not a wind or waterproof layer.

Awesome jacket, color is off!

I originally ordered the "Graphite/Bright Rose" color. When I got it instead of looking black and red it was grey and pink. Does not look like the picture. I will be exchanging it for the blue one for sure! Overall the quality looks great. When trying it on inside I was starting to get too hot.

Also I was warned that this runs a little large. I ordered an xs, I'm 5'1" and 115 lbs, fits great.

Awesome jacket, color is off!

It's a Good'un

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

The person I gave this jacket to loves it! She says it's super warm, but still waaay lightweight and comfortable. The adjustable hood is sweet, and she likes the elastic at the cuffs. She's taken it camping/climbing/adventuring a couple of times, brushing up against branches and sandstone, and the classy black fabric still looks as good as ever.

I think I made a good choice on this one.

I love this coat! We spent Thanksgiving at a remote cabin and temps dropped to 15 degrees below zero. I wore a thin base layer under and this coat kept me very warm. I don't think I've ever not shivered in that cold of temps. I've also used it in the 20s and was comfortable and not over heated. It's very versatile. It also fits true to size. I'm 5'2", 125# and got a small. I tried on an extra small which was more fitted . The small is fitted but still allows for a hoodie under if I want. I got it on sale but would pay full price.

Love it!

This is the warmest coat I have ever owned! I love the hood. Works great in below zero temps with wind! It is not too bulky either. Fits TTS. Got it on sale, but would buy it for full price knowing what I know now!

Great product but ditch the hood.

My husband bought this jacket a few years ago. It's a great product and did not have a hood. I would buy this if it did not have a hood. Now looking for other options.
