Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Down Jacket - Women's

Simple, lightweight, and warm.

The Mountain Hardwear Women's Ghost Whisperer Down Jacket is ready for backcountry touring, winter ascents, long belays, and hut-to-hut trips. The lightweight 7Dx10D Whisperer ripstop nylon works with the lighweight down to make this jacket weigh a mere 6oz; the lightest down jacket on the market. The 800-fill Q.shield insulation provides plenty of warmth without weight while you're on belay or ripping skins, and it resists moisture so a little water won't thwart your insulation. A single interior toggle hem saves on weight and makes adjustments quick and easy. And with its stowable design, you can quickly stuff it in one of its two zippered hand pockets and throw it in your pack whenever you're headed to the hills.

Great Jacket-Weird Shoulder Fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

So far this jacket has been so amazing and warm up in the mountains on climbing trips or nights camping. It is extremely lightweight and so easy to throw in a packed bag full of gear. The only weird part is the fit of the shoulders. I usually wear a size small and while it fit in the body, I could barely move my arms because the shoulders were so tight. I ended up exchanging it for the medium which was perfect for my shoulders but slightly large in the body. Because the jacket itself is so great, I don't really mind the strange fit. Just be aware if you have larger shoulders and consider going a size up.

Do you like being warm?

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Do you like being warm and toasty on a cool fall or brisk winter day? Then this is the jacket for you! Add a windbreaker or rain shell if the weather is less than pleasant and you won't regret it!

With these thinner jackets, I'm always afraid of tearing them when I'm out climbing. I haven't managed to put a hole in it yet, and I haven't exactly been gentle with the jacket!

Overall, I'd say it's a worthwhile investment!

Lightweight down jacket!

Awesome lightweight down jacket (6 oz??)- crazy! I love how packable and fluffy it is at the same time. I originally ordered a medium based on some reviews complaining about the tighter armpits (I have athletic shoulders). Exchanged it for the small. Just a smidgeon small in the pits and probably a little bigger in the torso than preferred but overall a great jacket. Love the dark purple color!!

Super Light!

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size

This was a gift to my mother. I was shocked with how light the jacket was. I almost couldn't believe that it was going to be warm whatsoever, but my mother said it is very warm and has been an excellent jacket for quick on the go tasks.

Great for backpacking!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Extra Small

I used this on a backpacking trip & it worked great. It packs down excellently & is perfect for cool nights. The fabric seemed to resist the wind & some very light drizzle as well. I have long arms & the arm length was still great for me at a size extra small.

Unanswered Question

Is this jacket reversible? Am thinking about getting the white but hoping I could reverse to grey inside (white always gets so dirty...). Thanks.

Not the same fit

I ordered this jacket last year and LOVED it, so I wanted another! Although, this time around there were some changes made to the fit and the medium no longer fits across my shoulders and the large would be too big overall. There also was a new material on the inside cuff that seemed great, but wasn't enough to keep it, so I'm returning it.

After lots of research, this was the one

I purchased this jacket almost a year ago after having owned similar products from other brands and could not believe the difference. The cut is spectacular--flattering waist (on GEAR?! amazing) and enough room for light layering. I have long arms and legs, so I find the arm length to be perfect. If you're quite petite, YMMV.

I primarily use this jacket for camping and backpacking because of its warmth to weight ratio, but I wouldn't hesitate to throw it in my purse for a night on the town that was going to turn chilly. I think it looks great, but more importantly, it WORKS. The first time I tried one on (a friend's) I was SUPER skeptical because of how light/thin it was. Within 10 minutes, I was toasty and had to take it off (we were inside).

I love that it packs down into a pocket. I don't store it like this, but if I'm throwing it in my purse, I definitely take the time to zip it up and pack it down. I wouldn't expect a cotton t-shirt to emerge from my purse without nicks from my keys/pens, so I take care.

THIS IS THE WINNER!

Struggled size wise with Mountain hardwear, even though the 800 down fill is exactly what we wanted to go with.
After trying on smalls and mediums in few different jackets, The Ghost whisperer had the best fit on the body. It was a nice cut at the waist while not being too small. The sleeves are a little long, but the Medium ended up being better than the small for layering purposes.

After a few different tries, this jacket in Size M was the best fit for my sister-in-law!

Gave as a Gift and she loves it

I gave this jacket to my mom as a gift at the beginning of winter and she wore it throughout the winter and absolutely loves it. She loves how light it is yet how very very warm it keeps her. It's the lightest down jacket I've ever seen. If you're dealing with "wet cold" like rain/snow then you do want to wear a shell because this jacket is not water proof at all.

Nice jacket but sizing is weird.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XS

I originally purchased this jacket in a small, knowing full well that it would fit a little larger. I planned on using it for winter excursions and well.... it was HUGE. I normally wear an XS in almost everything so I knew full well it would be bigger but not "look at me wearing this huge trash bag I'm swimming in" huge. So I decided to exchange it for an XS thinking it would fit okay enough to put a few layers underneath. It fit and I thought hallelujah! An ultralight jacket I can layer under. Nope.... The armholes fit oddly tight and made it very uncomfortable to move my arms. If I stand completely still I had no issues, but hiking and staying still don't really mesh well. The arms were a little long, but hey, whatever. If the arm holes didn't fit so oddly tight around my shoulders/armpit area I definitely would have kept it. It really is a great jacket for what it is and am sad I had to return it. I returned both jacket sizes and ended up getting a Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket and am very happy with my end purchase.

Thanks for the insight on the sizing, Megan! It is really appreciated!

Horrible excuse for a jacket

Ordered this jacket for my wife. The fit is good, but this jacket in "white" is actually more like a clear plastic with a white underlayer sewn into a jacket shape. You can actually hold it up to the light and see all the down feathers (which are dark and relatively few) inside of it. I can't believe Mountain Hardware actually charges over $300 for this.. it should be sold at K-Mart or Big Lots clearance rack for $19.99.. and then maybe... just maybe.

Brian, sorry for your disappointment. Products like these are not for everyone and the price is exponentially higher when you get a product like this to be at or below 7 ounces. The fabric is actually supposed to be that thin and it's actually more expensive per yard than just about any fabric out there. Sorry you did not like the product but I just wanted to let you know that the design and function that you don't like is actually what makes the jacket have the warmest to weight ratio of any jacket on the market. As an alternative I would recommend looking at the Nitrous Jacket, it's a bit heavier, thicker face fabric and much more affordable but is still a top quality option. Thanks.

Want to love, awkward sizing

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I really want to love this jacket, but it's the sizing that's an issue for me. I initially bought a medium elsewhere, but when I tried it on I was swimming in it, especially in the sleeves. The sleeves were comically puffy on me and ended way past my fingers (maybe I just have short arms?). There is elastic around the wrists of this jacket, but it wasn't tight enough to keep my hands from disappearing and there are no Velcro wrist closures. I returned the medium and ordered a small from here. The sleeve length wasn't too long and everything seemed to fit perfect, with the exception of the back and armpit area. Moving around makes the back a bit tight and the armholes are a bit constricting. If I'm not moving my arms around too much it's fine, otherwise it becomes a little annoying. The fit of this jacket is a bit confusing to me, especially since I fit perfectly into the small of Mountain Hardwear's Downtown Coat. Other than that, I really do like this jacket. It's light and compacts into its own pocket nicely, serves as a great single layer for a cool day and nice as a lower layer for colder days. If it wasn't for the sizing issue I'd give it 5 stars.

Unbelievable!

Bought this as a gift for a friend because I love the one that I bought for myself last year. It is so comfortable that she never takes it off. The warmth to weight ratio is incredible. Lightest jacket of this type that I know of. If you drop it, it doesn't fall, it floats to the ground. Easy to pack, compresses down to pocket size. It appears to be water resistant. Good for layering or as an external garment. Excellent for warmth and casual activities such as hiking/snowshoeing/shoveling snow, but it will not hold up as an external garment for heavy labor. My brother ruined his working construction; it ripped.

I have lived in the Midwest my entire life and I have been through several different winter coats. After many hours of researching coats, I found that this one met my needs best. I absolutely love how light it is. How compact it can become. It is worth the money. If you want a hood, this may not be the best option. I would definitely buy this item again.

It is a very nice light weight jacket that packs small in a suitcase. It is very comfortable. I am a flight attendant and I pack it for my layovers. Great for the fall. . It would not work for bitter cold weather.

    Nice but not for me

I got the L size in Bright Rose. It's bright, saturated magenta, and I liked the color. It is very lightweight and the nylon has a silky feel. The main reason I'm returning it is the fit. While it seemed a bit too roomy in the upper arms, the armpits were a bit constricting. Otherwise I liked the fit, especially the neck. On some jackets, the stiffness of the zipper makes the neck uncomfortable when zipped all the way up, but that wasn't the case here. (I did find the zipper a bit sticky, like others have said.)

i haven't had the chance to use it in super cold weather yet, but I took it on a trip in the Sierra and was impressed by how compressible and light it was.
