Crater Lake Long-Sleeve Hoodie delivers lightweight UPF 50+ protection for sunny adventures

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

“I like this hoodie for hot days when I want sun protection without overheating. The fabric is super lightweight and breathable, and it dries quickly if I’m sweating on a hike or splashing around near the water. The hood and thumbholes are great for keeping coverage when the sun is intense.”

When the summer sun is blazing and the miles keep rolling, we pull on the Crater Lake Long-Sleeve Hoodie from Mountain Hardwear to stay cool, covered, and comfortable. Whether we’re backpacking through high-alpine terrain, casting along a riverbank, or moving through a long approach to the crag, this lightweight layer keeps the sun off our skin without slowing us down.

The breathable polyester blend wicks moisture and dries quickly to keep us comfortable during long, hot days outside. Stretch construction moves easily with every reach and stride, while UPF 50+ protection helps shield our skin from harsh sun exposure. A fixed hood adds coverage for the head and neck, and thumbholes keep sleeves in place to protect the backs of our hands. Lightweight and versatile, this hoodie is built for bright days on the trail, water, and rock.

Here's what customers have to say

The product is praised for its lightweight, breathable, and comfortable fabric that provides excellent sun and wind protection without causing overheating, even in high temperatures. The fit is generally good, though some recommend sizing up for a looser, more flattering look. Key strengths include the high-quality, durable fabric that washes well, as well as features like the thumb holes and hood. While there are minor criticisms about the drawstring and small pocket, the product is widely regarded as a versatile and effective sun shirt for outdoor activities.

Happy with this purchase

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I searched the internet for this hoody in a popular, medium size and found it for a good price on backcountry. Love the look, fit, and functionality of this top especially for travel in Asia. It offers good sun protection and will be a breeze to hand wash and dry. And oh so lightweight and stretchy.

Crater Lake Long Sleeve hoodie

Really disappointed with this after it wore a weak spot where my Garmin watch is after only a couple of hikes and runs. I have other brands that have lasted a few years with similar use hiking/running and wearing a Garmin watch near the wrist.

Really good coverage! Even with high temps, i don’t overheat nor find that the shirt gets soaked with sweat and sticks to my skin!

Great shirt!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I bought this Mountain Hardwear hoodie about four years ago and I use it all summer long! I recently decided I needed it in another color… it’s awesome lightweight sun protection on a hot day.

A new backpacking favorite

This fabric is fabulous! It feels luxurious and is not too clingy. Sweat wicking, breathable, and soft. In the camo pattern the price was a crazy steal!

Great coverage. I love how lightweight and comfortable it is. Breathable, so hot weather isn't a problem.

Clings in all the wrong places

Mountain Hardware, this is a rare fail. Please change the design. This sun hoodie has super lightweight fabric that feels amazing. Unfortunately the fit is so odd that it's going straight back. It's supposed to keep you cool and dry in the sun, so it needs to be loose fitting. Which this does not. M was the perfect size for me, but it clings where my Backcountry and Cotopaxi shirts are nice and airy/loose. It seriously looks and feels terrible. There are much better sun hoodies out there, and I'm going back to those.

I like the Fabric and fit of this shirt.

Familiarity:

Fabric is a lightweight and feels good on you. Breathes easily. Little zipper pouch on side is a nice bonus, enough for a key or some &. I wouldn’t put anything real happy as the fabric is very light.

Love everything but the drawstring!

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Got this in purple, and it's great—good coverage, not too hot, love the sun protection. The only thing that doesn't work for me is the drawstring at the bottom. After it fell in the toilet (!), I chopped it out, but it's sewn in on one side. Would get in another fun color in a heartbeat (and would chop out the drawstring before its inevitable toilet plunge).

I bought this to wear hiking and it did not disappoint. Lightweight, wicks sweat and protects skin from sun and bugs. Great value!
